Metropolis Caffe is a timeless gem, judged Hamilton's best cafe in 1999, 2000 and winner of New Zealand's best cafe in 1999.
This place registered under Historic place trust of Hamilton, used to be known as ‘Paul’s Book Arcade’ which was one of the 10th biggest books arcade at the time and relocated to this site in 1925 by William Paul, designed by Ernst Plischke. It’s floor was covered by large black and white tiles in a chequer board pattern. This design was radically modern given the period and character of the small provincial town that Hamilton was at the time.
Now, the only remains of Paul’s Book Arcade appear to be a position of the black and white tiling, the street-front display cabinet and the mezzanine floor and stairs.
Thanks to our customers, as because of you, we are still able to maintain this unique piece of Hamilton’s Heritage.
Metropolis also supporting local media, local art work on the walls which giving it a warm but ever changing feel.
