Creepy place. Everyone in there was really weird. We arrived within reception hours yet there were nobody around - not one staff member. There were underwear just laying about in the hallway which no one picked up for days. The kitchen is dirty, the private room was spacious but with nothing in it, except a huge heater which hangs above your head with small rusty hooks which is scary.
We booked the same day of staying. While check in is open till 20, we got here at 19 and nobody was there. We got a messege with all the info but couldnt ask any additional questions since there was no staff member around and there are signs everywhere that say if you call after hours you will be charged 20$, we didnt risk it. The bedding and pillowcases were dirty, the blanket was without a cover. The heater is hanging over your head from the cieling. The washing machine only uses cold water. The kitchen is equipped but very old. Location is good and central.
Many details were bad, for example way too few bathrooms for number of guests only one on our floor, extremely short reception hours, gate shut until 8am making it impossible to leave the parking spot early, etc. But the worst was the behaviour of who I suspect is the manager. After a very long drive we parked into the on-site lot, not noticing the sign saying it'd be closed until 8am since we were just keen to finally get some rest and we didn't anticipate such a ludicrous policy could exist with no early morning reception to resolve our fault for gaving semi-decent expectations I guess. After seeing we'd only got 1 key for the 4 of us we called the manager to ask for another since the reception was already shut, and despite it taking many calls to reach him, this already irked him rather than him apologizing for the delay, despite it being their fault for giving a single key and having very short reception hours. Fine. Then after having noticed the parking lot issue as 3 of us needed to leave early we had to call again: this time it took him even longer and when he finally did respond he threw a childish temper tantrum because we'd called around 10pm so not even that late. Then he threatened to kick us out if we dared call him again for asking him to do what is supposed to be his job. Just pathetic behaviour especially considering his feeble attempt at a tough guy act throughout the process. The next day he offered a half-hearted apology which is appreciated and the reason I didn't put 1/10, but fact remains that this sort of conduct is appalling especially considering our needs were due to *their* terrible policies and ineptitude. Steer well clear if you're looking for a positive hostel atmosphere. Note this happened in 2019
This place was the worst place we stayed during our trip. In the room, the heater was on the ceiling and didn't do anything, there was no ventilation in the room except a small window without a fly screen. The men's showers were so short that you had to crouch to get under them, and they were aimed so that you had to sit against the wall to use them. There was also no place to store soap or clean clothes during your shower. The kitchen was dirty and poorly equipped. The gas stoves were outright dangerous as you needed to light them with a lighter and even then they wouldn't stay lit. All the cookware was damaged and stained. The knives were blunt and useless. There was no hot water to clean dishes, only cold. The entire time we were there the dining room smelled of cigarette smoke. The coin dryer didn't run long enough to dry anything so you had to pay twice. Please don't ever book this place.
A great location in Launceston. Walking distance to the shopping strip and places to eat. The room was clean and we had our own ensuite. Secure building and a comprehensive kitchen if you wish to cook. Great if you are on a budget.Rooms: 4/5
Fantastic and helpful staff, we had a great time @ Launceston backpackers! Staff were discreet but very comprehensive and also responsive with us and our booking requests, which is a big + for young people. The beds are not the coziest but it is very affordable and it is a very clean hostel.
One of the best backpackers I’ve been to in Australia. Good prices, big comfortable rooms, friendly staff. The kitchen is very big as well as the dinning room and TV room with a lot of outside areas. Definitely coming back.
A bit oldfashioned and unfortunately very busy since this is the only backpacker place around Launceston. But i had a nice welcome, with all the information i needed. Most people working here are very friendly, except for the one guy who barged in my room without knocking! There’s a big kitchen en nice common room where you can watch tv or sit around for a chat.
Location was fine, staff was humble but they didn’t tell me about WiFi details and when I came back on accomodation no one was there to help me out with Wifi. It’s available but all you have to do is pay $1 for High speed. Also, bed was uncomfortable, got back pain.
Stayed several times - excellent kitchen, large rooms, friendly atmosphere, superb location, well run and beautiful heritage architecture.
