Story

Joanie’s Baretto is Thornbury’s answer to that joint you stumbled upon without a travel guide winding your way through the back streets of your favourite Italian city.

Born out of the Umberto Espresso Bar family, our customers had nowhere to go for pre or post dinner drinks so we thought we’d create a space for our Northside’ paesani’ and make a night of it.

Accompanied by the same warmth and hospitality you’re used to receiving from Umberto, Joanie’s is a place you can indulge and get loose in.

Italian booze is our thing. Discover wines and craft beers from all over Italy.
Aperitivi, digestivi and grappe.

There are also spuntini, crostini and antipasti to nibble on.

APERITIVO EVENINGS

‘Aperitivo’ is the Italian word for both a type of drink and a ritual that began in the 18th century and still practised by Italians today.

The word roughly means ‘to open’ and the ritual is the pre-dinner drinks and small bites of food that serve to open up your appetite.
If Marcello Mastroianni and Sophia Loren lived in Thornbury they would drink with us.
So end your working day like a Roman with an Aperol Spritz, a glass of Prosecco or a stiff Negroni.
