About

One of Tasmania's best experiences. Cruise from Strahan and see World Heritage Wilderness as well as the beautiful reflections of the Gordon River.

"Gordon River Cruises offers wilderness tours into the UNESCO Tasmanian Wilderness World Heritage Area. Departing daily from Strahan on Tasmania’s remote west coast, cruise aboard Spirit of the Wild, a purpose-built catamaran, designed to cruise quietly in 'Whisper Mode' on the Gordon River with electric motors. Our guests enjoy a viewing experience that is second to none with expansive windows throughout the vessel and access to outdoor viewing decks, including a 360° deck on the top of the vessel. Gordon River Cruises has won GOLD at the Tasmanian Tourism Awards three years in a row for best Tour & Transport Operator."

A fantastic day out. This cruise out through the heads and around Macquarie Harbour, then up the beautiful Gordon river. All up we were cruising for around 6.5 hours and under electric power up the river was an amazing experience. We travelled on the upper deck and the provided lunch and snacks were great all providing the tastes of local products. I would highly recommend doing this tour when in Strahan. Great day and great knowledgeable staff.
An excellent day out on the river. All the crew were friendly and informative. The stops were interesting. The food was good too. We had the premiere package which had an enhanced food selection and better seating. In poor weather this would make a big difference. In nice weather, where you can spend more time on the outside deck area, the better seating wouldn’t matter as much. The trip was about six hours and covered Hells Gates, a stop at Sarah Island and a small excursion at the farthest point up the Gordon. Very happy we included this trip on our itinerary.
We did our cruise on a Sunday booked seating on main deck. Good views from seats, even those in the middle as these are slightly elevated. Guests can move around on outer decks for terrific views. Lunch provided was good with a selection to choose from buffet. Staff friendly & helpful and the information provided on the history of the area & heritage area was very detailed. Visit to Sarah Island with guided tour fabulous with a walk through the rain forest easy & informative. Would recommend this tour if visiting Strahan.
This cruise is an absolute must while in Strahan. The staff are friendly and very knowledgeable about the history and area. The ship is fantastic and switches to electric motors while exploring the Gordon River. The Sarah Island tour was amazing. A fantastic history lesson and walk around the ruins. The views were just spectacular and we would do it again next trip. Well done Gordon River Cruises.
Had such an amazing day on this cruise. The scenery is spectacular, a definite highlight of our holiday. Staff and food were great. The vessel is very comfortable and quiet which really added to the experience. Highly recommend and hope I'm lucky enough to do it again one day.
A thoroughly enjoyable experience made better with mostly nice weather and smooth water, although it did rain during the latter part of the cruise and visit to Sarah Island. Nice lunch buffet accessed by seating section, so it wasn't a free-for-all rush or long queue. If you are considering this cruise, I would certainly recommend the trip on the 'Spirit of the Wild'. Make the most of it and enjoy the views in the fresh air on the open front and rear decks but rug up for the possible wind and rain!
Premium cabin was worth the price with widely spaced 2x2 comfort reclining seating with in armrest tray. The entire trip was clearly described through PA system with occasional televised history snippets from actors playing roles from the past and tree buggers playing themselves. The trip started with pastries, mimosa and barista coffee and drive through hells gate. Feel the roll of the Southern Ocean for a bit before turning back into the harbor. Then a leisurely silent cruise though Gordon River - on the front upper deck, champagne in hand- take in the world heritage site with unspoilt flora on either side and mirror like river surface with no other boat or human in sight. A 20 min stopover for a gentle walk through a rain forest. Back for hot and cold lunch of rolls, salads, ham, salmon, trout and chicken with Tasmanian wine selection. Turn around for a 1 hour stopover and historical guided tour through Sarah Island. Finish off the trip with tea and delectable cakes. Back on the port after 6 hours that passed by quickly. Carefully got off the boat after over indulging in the libations served on request throughout the trip. What a great day out! Oh yes, spend the evening at the amphitheatre to enjoy the "Ship that never was".
Great tour. Highly recommended. Worth the money. Beautiful views, great services. Sarah island story is the best part. Personally I think the middle sitting is better than the window sitting. I took the afternoon cruise, dinner was okay, the buffet bar is a bit small for all the people. Don't expect the 2nd round if you are the last few people to get up for dinner. Overall it was a great experience.
We had the most fantastic day on our Gordon River Cruise… we booked Upper Deck as a bit of a splurge note - booked through our NRMA membership and got a great discount. The staff were so friendly and warm, the seats were comfortable and the large windows were great. The breakfast, morning tea, lunch & afternoon tea was all very generous and delicious. The sweet tarts and the potato and leek soup were the absolute highlight. My only criticism would be the salads at lunchtime, they weren't as great as they could've been but absolutely everything else was first class. Excellent commentary throughout and the videos were helpful to add a layer of information to the day. We loved the Sarah Island tour and the history that was shared was so interesting. But my favourite part was the incredible scenery along the way and when the engines got switched off or is it switched to quiet? being out on the deck and floating along was so special and peaceful. The glass like water and the quietness was magical!
This 6 hour cruise took us to Sarah Island where we had dedicated guides giving us a wonderful history lesson about our first convicts to Australia. The cruise along the Gordon River was picturesque and informative especially the Heritage Walk. Lunch was superb and plenty of it. Staff very friendly and informative also. Highly recommended.
