About

Story

Golden Age Cinema and Bar has restored and reinvented the old screening room of the heritage-listed Paramount Pictures building in Surry Hills, Sydney. The bar is open six nights a week and, right next door, our beautiful 1940s cinema will host two screenings a night, with matinees on the weekend. For tickets visit our website www.ourgoldenage.com.au.

MORE ABOUT THE CINEMA

The former screening room of Paramount House has been carefully renovated by a bewitching collective of architects, interior designers, auteurs and furniture makers. It brings together the past, present and future to create a unique environment for people to watch films, enjoy a drink or host an event.

MORE ABOUT THE BAR

No movie ticket? No problem. You are always welcome in the bar which is open before, during and after each screening. Tucked away beneath the street, we’ve brought together some of the most interesting producers we could find to cast a great list of quality wines, beers, cocktails and food. The bar also serves cinema snacks and film-inspired food specials to match our cinema program.

MORE ABOUT THE PARAMOUNT HOUSE

Paramount House is a cultural, architectural and literal cornerstone of the area of Surry Hills once known as the ‘Hollywood Quarter’. Built in 1940 in a Late Deco style, it shows how elegance can be achieved by focusing on what is essential. Already regarded as a hub for many of Sydney’s creative businesses, the story of Paramount House is only just beginning.

This cinema is a mood and a great escape. I started going to watch 60s European films and it was a perfect atmosphere. Good negronis and popcorn flavours to complete the experience. Make sure you book as the theatre is an old screening room so petite.
Definitely more of a date spot then a movie with friends. I recommend you come early and have a drink at the bar first. Unique popcorn flavours such as cinnamon sugar. I wish my popcorn was a little more fresh or at least warm however, I noticed that only the Dendy and the Rits does fresh popcorn these days. The staff were friendly. The seats are low but were surprisingly comfortable. Definitely a vintage feel. Overall, a positive experience.
Been to Golden Age many times and visited last Saturday night. Great drinks as always but the most blase customer service I've seen in a long time. 4 staff behind the bar and no one in the whole venue except for 2 people at the bar, yet the staff barely bothered to say hello, no effort to make us feel welcome and when we left, not even an acknowledgement or wave. Hoping the manager sees this and reminds your staff that being hospitable and welcoming is always a requirement, even when the bar is quiet. I lead bar tours and I'm now reluctant to visit or recommend Golden Age to my guests. UPDATE: Thanks for the reply Golden Age - I do hope the team gets the message as it is a beautiful bar and location. I'll drop by for another visit at some point and look forward to being able to improve my review.
First time going here last night. The bar has a cool and intimate atmosphere, I highly recommend grabbing a drink and a can of popcorn while waiting for your session. The cinema is very well-maintained and takes you back in time, it was a very interesting experience.
A very interesting Bar, very small. You almost feel like you’re having drinks at home with your friends. Friendly staff and a great atmosphere
A Beautiful space with a Lynchian quality. Atmospherically moody in a good way. One of the best whisky sours I have ever had ! The best vintage cinematic experience.
The venue is ok, but the chairs are uncomfortable I understand the idea is to enjoy the 1940 furniture, but if you are a big guy, for sure you are not gonna enjoy the movie. The speakers are so loud for a small cinema, the feeling is like the screen is yelling at you.
This might be one of my favourite places in Sydney. I like the Art Deco, the semi underground vibe and the lighting - ideal for cinematic discussions. Staff are remarkably polite too! So why 4/5? The air con - irrelevant of the weather outside - is on fire - pun intended. It is very cold inside and after fifteen minutes, pretty much everyone starts wearing their coats or jumper. Not sure why but guys you should have a look at it!
Great little underground bar opposite Longrain with really friend servers and a good wine / cocktail list. Would highly recommend to check out for a movie or just a drink. Only gripe is the lack of seating.. once there's 7-8 groups of 2-3 people there is no seating left in the venue but everything else is great
Flies in cinema, several patrons came in late, and multiple people were on their phones throughout. Very disappointing. Sound system was also quite painful; so sharp and loud in such tight space, my ears still hurt.
