Georges is famous for the unique range of quality clothing and merchandise that has serviced the people of Central Queensland for well over a century.
Georges is one of Central Queensland’s historic establishments. Established in 1899 by Elien George, the business is famous for the unique range of quality clothing and merchandise that has serviced the people of Central Queensland for well over a century.
After starting out with two pack horses, and later a wagonette with five in hand, Elien built the original store, at the corner of Derby & Alma Street and established a travelling service to meet the needs of local farmers & graziers. The wagonette was eventually replaced by a 1929 Chev, which is still seen to day at George's premises.
A further branch of the business was established in 1948 by Elien’s youngest son, Alec, who became a well known identity in his own right because of his unique sales abilities and the extensive range of merchandise.
Today the business operates at 88 William St ( next door to O’dowd’s Irish Pub) and is managed by Alec’s daughter, Catherine, and her friendly team Lorraine, Kate, Maddie & Lyn who continue to provide high standard of service, quality goods, and a unique and enjoyable shopping experience.
