We stayed at these apartments over this weekend and we were very happy with the experience. The apartments are a well priced block and is by no means 5 star but then neither is the price. The apartment was clean and the location was great. The parking is a bit tight but we were told this before we arrived and we were able to cope with it ok anyway. The receptionist we dealt with Michelle I think was very helpful and pleasant. A lovely introduction to the place. I only give my review 4 stars because I never give 5 stars. We will not hesitate to stay there again when we are in town. Thank you for making our experience a lovely one.
Being short on money and trying to find somewhere cheap, quiet and safe for myself and my daughter in Melbourne proved to be a difficult task until I came across George Powlett. It's not fancy by any means, it's very out dated, however if you want a central location for a cheap price then this is the place for you! The room was small but it was all we needed since we spent most of our time exploring the city. Staff were so friendly and helpful and free parking was a bonus considering the surrounds are 1 hour metred parking most of the time. I would definitely stay there again!
Good service, gets all the basics right - kettle, towel change, soaps, cleanliness to name a few. Nice location for those not looking to stay in the CBD - beautiful gardens and houses around. Except for some issues with hot water it was a good experience.
Stayed 5 nights. Stay if you're on a tight budget. If you can afford somewhere nicer, then I recommend you do so. The positives were free wifi slow and numerous safe sites were blocked eg, IMDB, ABC news. Location. Staff were friendly enough. Unfortunately, we had to go to the shops and buy Jif, Glen20, carpet sanitiser and scrubbing brush, to clean the toilet, bathroom and spray carpet. House keeping only changes your towel and rubbish bin. They do not change your sheets, so request new ones. The block is for sale as of October 2015, so I doubt the Powlett apartments will be around for too much longer. But like I said, stay if your budget is tight, otherwise opt for somewhere else if you prefer a window/door handle that doesn't break off as you use it.
Was looking on every hotel deal sites to find the best deal for a 1 week stay in Central Melbourne. Didn't realise Melbourne is almost as expensive to stay in Sydney haha I found George Powlett Apartments in East Melbourne very close to the olympic ground for $750 for 7 night stay for 3 people :, the next in Line cheapest deal i had found was YHA hostel in the heart of the city for the exact price :. I only chose the apartments for ease of mind :D. It's been a long while since my last proper holiday in Melbourne so had no idea about my surroundings or how smooth my itinerary for my 1 week was going to go! George Powlett is in the perfect location considering the price aswell!! Your a 2 minute walk to Wellington Ave which has a 7/11, great cafe, tasty pizzas & the tram stop. Also across the road is the train station & the olympic park grounds with all the arenas. Its a 5 minute tram ride to the heart of the city and a 5 - 10 walk to botanical Gardens & the remembrance memorial :D!! Heading the opposite direction is Fitzroy & Collingwood, all the cool restaurants/cafes & pubs/bar were on smith street :D!! Its about 5 blocks away but if you walked it with a friend or 2 while talking it felt like you were there in no time :D !! The layout of the apartment was perfect with a double & single bed & ours had a big window in the room and some of the others have balconies. You got a compact kitchen with all the necessities like toaster, kettle, microwave, mini fridge & sink, also is stocked up with cutlery & plates, cups & bowls. Bathroom had a decent sized shower which some places you stay at lack lol!! Also had free off street parking for when i hired a car for 2 days ... was a bit sqaushy so it pays off to be a good driver :!! Car park had limited spots, always was 2 - 3 spots available each night but worst case during the day it was fairly empty & if you were hiring a car you can park for free on the street at night which is convenient enough cause if you were hiring a car you would be driving it during the day :D!! Probably my favourite part of the apartments was the reception area :!! As you walked into the apartments you walk up on flight of stairs & to the right you had all the brochures/maps of what to do in Melbourne & on the left you had a whole bunch of Discount cards for places to eat & attractions in Melbourne & directlyin front of you was the reception desk which is open 8am - 5pm 7 days a week. There was either a brunette or blonde girl at the desk each day :, both was super nice, helpful & talkative if you wanted to have a Banter :D! Overall my 1 week stay was fantastic & the Apartments were clean, friendly staff/friendly other residents & without a doubt was a perfect location :D!!
Stayed 5 nights Mon-Fri in late November. PROS: - The price is very affordable! I guess you get what you pay for! - Super close to MCG & Public Transport. - Easy 15-20min walk to city - Located in pretty area of East Melbourne - Fairly quiet may have been when we stayed - Bed resonably comfortable - Towels were changed daily - Flat screen tv & air con CONS: - Building interior is dirty from the minute you walk in & it smells of old cigarette smoke - Appartment room reeked of cirgarette smoke, it was so unbearable! We had to buy aromatherapy disinfectant spray, spray whole room daily & leave windows open. Smell was awful!!! - General cleanliness of room & bathroom was very below standard - Crockery in cupboard dirty - Pillows flat - Hot water runs out quickly - Leaking tap in kitchen sink drips constantly - Odd lighting - Everything is very old & not restored - Staff are unfriendly
Was it the fact that the shower rail was held on by sellotape, the three inch gap between the floor and front door, that the shower walls were growing... something? No. It was the fact that the bathroom/toilet door rotated a full 93 degrees to serve a duel function, leaving a massive gap in the wall and the person plainly visible. I arrived at the apartment block at 7pm. They knew we were coming, and said they would e-mail us the entrance code. They didn't. We had to sit outside for 40 minutes in the rain until another guest let us in, and then we still didn't have a key or any idea what room we were in. Fortunately one of the residents told us they found their key under their mat. So I checked all 40+ doormats in the complex and randomly picked one with a key. The staff are hostile, the rooms filthy, the building is falling apart literally the 'internet room' is rotten and the whole place smelt of mildew. The one redeeming quality was... no, I got nothing. AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COSTS!
Good clean simple apartment with comfy beds. The staff Michelle were very friendly and helpful. Would not hesitate to stay again.
I think that most of the reviews posted so far are a bit unfair... I stayed at george powlett apartments last night with my girlfriend and a mate and we were more than happy with what we got. The rooms were open, beds reasonably comfy and there was free super hi speed internet to play world of warcraft on. we arrived at 10am and were able to check in at 10:30 even though check in was 1pm at the earliest on the site. the staff were helpful and the rooms were very clean. george powlett isnt the place you want to stay if you are after something swanky and high class, but it is affordable very close to city 2 min walk to tram stop, 10 min tram to the city. If you are young and dont mind a bit of street noise this place is perfect. DO NOT BRING A LARGE/MEDIUM CAR FOR THE CARPARK UNLESS YOU HAVE SUPREME REVERSING SKILLS!!! was definetly the tightest carpark ive ever experienced and quite a headache to get out of. that being said i managed to do it in a commodore. also i reccomend checking out the London Tavern in richmond, bout a 15 min walk past the mcg. best parmis in melbourne.
Pros: Good location to the city; free wifi; free on site parking Cons: Separate taps for hot and cold water makes it a pain to get the water temperature right; parking lots rather limited and very narrow
