We stepped into this tiny gem close to the 3pm closing time, and the host Tony was so hospitable that he still gave us a guided tour. He shared a wealth of information and the demonstrations on the restored equipment were great. We learned a lot and appreciate all the hard work that has contributed to the museum. We highly recommend a visit! Thank you, Tony, and to those that upkeep this wee treasure.
It’s very unexpected. It looks small but the tour took 30+ minutes. The machine demonstrations were great and the host was very knowledgeable. It’s also the place that made the rope for lord of the rings. If you’re into that kind of stuff then also look out for the part that was featured in the hobbit. One thing to bare in mind is that it’s a very post industrialisation euro-centric look at flax in New Zealand. If you want to know about it from a strictly Māori perspective this might not be the flax museum for you.
Great little museum with lots of local information. Arrive at 1pm and you’ll get the full tour explaining the history of the flax industry in Foxton- the flax capital of NZ! It was great to see the working machinery.
Foxton was Harakeke heaven. The small building holds a lot of history.. A working stripper machine in repairs at the moment, photos of the area showing the hundreds of acres being harvested. Even product on display. Donations accepted.
Stepping into this grunty little museum...? Is like stepping back in time. The smells, the noises, to old historian telling his yarns... This is the real stuff! And when that century-old noisy Flax Stripper machine kicks into gear? You've feel like you've landed back in pioneering days. It's our nation's heritage come back to life...
Thanks Tony for the guided tour of the Museum. It's well worth it, as Tony is so knowledgeable about the flax industry and its history. Now we understand why Foxton was settled and learning about what flax used to be used for. Making ropes, carpets etc. Lots of information and photos on the walls to read too.
Interesting place. The manager is passionate about flax and flax farming. If you ask questions he will go off script and explain not about the local area. The museum is full of interesting pictures and history of the area.
The council has done an awesome job with this walk - I enjoyed all the historical facts along the way
Yes the strippers have been working for a long time in Foxton! And that's a flax!
I was not expecting to find a stripper museum in Foxton!
