Founders Park

About

Family attraction: experience life as it was in Nelson in the 1880s to 1930s. Also hire venues for your wedding, meeting or christmas party.

Story

Enjoy the charms of days gone by. Stroll through the character streets, tranquil established gardens and charming village greens.
During the summer months take a ride on the train, meet resident artists working in ceramics, wrought iron, stone jewellery and the ancient art of cooperage.
Relax and dine alfresco at the Founders Café Brewery – beer tastings are available.
The Park also stages large public events including, March Fest, Evolve, Nelson Growables Garden Fair, and our Queen's Birthday Book Fair.

This historic village is the result of community spirit, the brain-child of a number of Nelson citizens who set up Founders (Inc.) in 1977. It was made possible with initial support from Nelson's business community. A number of major firms assisted in the construction of historic replica buildings and the donation of original buildings. An extensive historic collection of up to 20,000 items was also donated by Nelson residents, leading to the opening of Founders Heritage Park to the public in 1986.

Nelson City Council took over ownership and management of the park on 1 April 1995.

Very quiet and not much of anything to do - besides of course looking at the displays and the buildings. Cool things to see if you like history but wasn’t very interactive and a lot was closed. Definitely not worth the price. It has potential to be fun if there were real people in the shops all dressed up, things to buy like in the general store having old candy, drinks, toys, whatever. The cafe was pumping and the playground is good for older kids. The rail cart/train costs extra which was disappointing as it’s the only interactive thing and you already pay to get into the park. The grounds gardens and even the displays were also not very tidy.
Maybe better to wait for summer before visiting, even with it being school holidays very little was open. Displays that were open were very well done.
Wonderful place to explore. Can spend a few hours there.nUnless there's an event on its usual free entry for locals or people going to the cafe.nLots of things to check out -nheritage buildings and vehicles.nIf you've got kids its nice to sit outdoor at the cafe and enjoy lunch next to the playground to keep an eye on them.nBuy tickets for the short train ride. It goes back and forth each way on two tracks and they have to change the end the locomotive is on each direction so it take a bit of time, maybe was an hour.
The Founders Heritage Park is a gem in Nelson's crown. My expectations were low considering entry was only eleven or so dollars. However it soon became clear how historically significant and visually pleasing the buildings were. Hundreds of items in the stores made me feel like I was in Back To The Future III. The amount of ships in bottles was astounding. I wish I only knew to bring some gold coins to operate the model trains in the train carriage.
Omg, do this! Highly recommended if you are in Nelson. NZ may be a new country but so much to learn!
