Boutique art classes and workshops held in an artists studio, hidden in a heritage Victorian building in the heart of Brunswick Street, Fitzroy.

Story

Beginners:

This class is designed for the complete beginner, and through a series of exercises and examples the student learns the fundamentals of painting, including choice of mediums and materials, preparing to paint, basic colour theory, and composition.

We have two specifically designed courses to enable the student to confidently continue painting at home, we offer a short 4-week introductory course and an extended 8-week course. This course is also recommended for those wishing to refresh old skills.

Intermediate and advanced:

This class is offered to beginners who wish to continue after completing the 4 or 8-week beginners course, or those with some prior painting experience. Students work on a mixture of set projects and their own interests, and are encouraged to develop their own language and direction. All students continue to receive one-on-one teaching.

I cannot rate Fitzroy Painting high enough! If I could give 10/10 stars I would. What a beautiful, relaxing and inspiring environment to learn in. All of the teachers are obviously masters of their arts and are very happy to share their knowledge and insights. It’s a very welcoming place for someone like myself with no previous art experience. I won’t be going anyone else to learn - thank you for such wonderful experiences
The beginner watercolour class is perfect for anyone interested in starting or refreshing their artsy skills. Small enough to feel personal but large enough to have a nice community vibe. The studio inspires the artist within, and Judith is absolutely lovely.
I did a four week drawing studio 3 course at Fitzroy painting, and had the best time. Julian is super insightful, and has clearly put a lot of thought into the structure of the course, as by the end of it I could approach my drawing in a whole new way, with many new skills and confidence, especially tackling figurative subjects. The best! Highly recommended.
I did beginners oil painting and loved it. The teachers were really talented and insightful - and encouraging! - and I was really happy with what I managed to paint. Can't wait to do more!
I completed all drawing classes from 1-3 with Julian this year. I started out as a complete beginner who'd watched a few tutorials but could only draw flat, unproportioned shapes. I finished the final live drawing session last night and I'm stunned at how far I've come. Julian is a fantastic teacher and keeps the sessions fun and light-hearted while providing great feedback through each drawing session. He is approachable, patient and made something that felt overwhelming at first - like drawing a live person - feel possible. I would say to anyone that is thinking about getting back into drawing or starting out on their journey that you will be happy you jumped into this course. I feel genuinely sad that I've finished and will probably look to do level 3 again next time it comes around.
I really enjoyed the beginners oil painting class with Fitzroy Painting, and I must say, the three hours of each class went by waaaayyy too quickly. The classes were structured really well, and the instructor provided great advice and feedback.
I had the best time doing both beginners and the second level oil painting classes. Thank you so much to the instructors and the owners, the new space is BEAUTIFUL! So much light, has a great vibe to it. I learnt so much about colour mixing, colours, oils, drawing skills, abstraction and enjoyed spending time doing something I love. I did the 6.30-9.30pm classes and easily found parking on the street right outside. Thank you if you are on the fence doing these classes, just do it! Worth your time and money! I’ll be back for sure
I highly recommend taking the 'Oil Painting for Beginners Level 1' course with Kez. After forgetting what I had learned in school over a decade ago and not making much progress with YouTube tutorials, this course was incredibly helpful. I learned a lot and feel way more confident practicing at home. Excited for Level 2!
The class was amazing! The women were so lovely and accommodating as I had to reschedule the first class I’d booked. The class was a Christmas gift from my husband. Such a thoughtful gift for someone who doesn’t need much. I loved it. Highly recommend it.
Their beginner drawing class is absolutely fantastic - clear instruction, in an enjoyable environment - a 10/10 experience!
