"Five acres was reserved for a cemetery at Ferntree Gully in 1873. Originally named 'Scoresby', it was renamed in 1896. The site was part of John Peters' original 217 acre property with only grazing land, forest and virtually no buildings surrounding the cemetery in 1873. The nearby railway line was opened in 1889 and most local shops were built around World War I.Trustee names were submitted to the Health Dept in 1873 but the first trustees of the cemetery were officially appointed in 1882. It was another three years before the first burial took place - the locally well respected Albert Selman who died in 1885.Knox City Council took over the operation of the cemetery in 1982.Staff are on site 7am-4pm Monday to Friday."
