Fantastic well signposted walks through native bush- mostly beech and punga. Can see a lot of birds, particularly in the evening. Spectacular views over Wellington harbor and Wainuiomata Valley. Some tracks are a step climb but well worth it.

Rata ridge (heading from the top of the Wainuiomata Hill road to the summit of mount Lowry overlooking Eastbourne and Wainuiomata, and from there out to the BP station in Wainuiomata) is a fantastic walking and MTB track. The climb to the top takes about 45-60 minutes, and is amongst the beech trees for most of the way. On a MTB it's a fun, technical climb, with enough steep pinches to challenge and keep your heart rate up. The run from the summit out to Wainuiomata is fantastic fun - it's got 2 short uphills, but is predominantly technical descending in the beech forest cornflakes. This is a perfect addition to a couple of loops in the Wainui trail project.
