An essential go-to for after work drinks. The staff are friendly, the food is decent & there is generally enough space for a small group indoors or out. Often there is live music, so you may want to retire outdoors if you're wanting to share a conversation over a beverage. There is also a separate smokers area just outside with ample seating.

The best shoe string fries in all of South Melbourne! Check their website for opening hours. Great coffee and very friendly staff. They also serve a good pizza. Calabrese is my favourite!

Downstairs is a hidden little gem, in a random location (it didn’t look like any other restaurants were around). I liked the modern and warm interior with the dim lighting. Steak was on special for the night with a glass of wine which we all ordered for dinner. All 4 of us had our steak cooked differently and were all happy with the way it was cooked. One steak was cooked rare and it was mentioned it was cold when brought out (maybe because the rare steak was waiting while the well done steak was cooekd). Apart from that we found the food delicious, friendly customer service (we asked for a photo and they turned on the lights) and a really nice atmosphere. I liked the outdoor seating so next time I come if it is a nice night it will be lovely to sit outside. I think if you are in the area it is worth coming here for food.

Liked it. Great service - quite attentive. Ambiance was a bit loud to have a conversation on a Friday night. (They had live music.) That's neither a positive nor negative. Food was good. Prices very reasonable. Only reason I didn't love it was a matter of my own personal preference.

Always enjoy the food at Downstairs but the coffee always seems a bit milky, even when I order extra shots. The music is a bit loud too. Otherwise it's a great place to eat and hang out!
