Let me start by saying this: the best pies are found here.nnI've eaten pies from bakeries all over Melbourne, and Kyneton Country Cob Bakery is, without a doubt, my favourite. The range is incredible, and every pie is packed with flavour, making it genuinely difficult to decide which one to choose.nnThe good news is you can't go wrong. Pick any pie on the menu, and you won't be disappointed.
Decent pies. Crazy selection, I only went with the basics to keep it easy and get a good idea of the classics. A good amount of cheese in the Cheese and Bacon, best I’ve had in a while on the front. The plain pie was good. Good flavour and rich gravy. The pastry was nice on it though thin. A little thicker pastry would be nice. Service was quick even though it was out the door line up and still friendly. Ran out of 3 of the other styles of pie we were going to try though.nnMy gripe was with the custard tart and desserts. It was tiny and not very full, the flavour of the custard to pastry ratio was so out of whack and you had to suck a big mouthful of custard to get any sort of flavour and with that there was only biscuit left. The lemon meringue was also a bit underwhelming. If we had of just had pies would have been 4 stars!
There are pies, and then there are best pies in Australia pies. Country Cob is firmly in the second category nnThe BBQ beef mac and cheese pie we both ordered was absolutely insane. Honestly, words don’t really do it justice. We also shared a sausage roll, which was equally impressive nnThe place is the business. Line out the door, and for very good reason. Get there
I had their Singapore chili crab pie and it tasted like the authentic dish, which was a pleasant surprise. The pie was also filled with juicy crab meat. The queue moved quickly, which was good, but the interior of the shop could use some improvements. It might be helpful if they displayed the pie menu outside for those waiting in line to look at.
Tried the popular scallop curry pie and vanilla slice at Country Cob Bakery; both were phenomenal. The pie was unique and full of flavour with a generous scallop filling, while the vanilla slice had a rich creamy centre. There were plenty of other sweet and savoury baked goods on display that I was keen to try next time. Service was a bit of a letdown - staff weren’t particularly friendly, though it may have just been due to how busy it was. Overall, it has that classic old-fashioned bakery vibe.
