Story

A RELATIVE newcomer to Port Melbourne’s Bay Street strip is Ciao Cielo (it translates as ‘‘Hello Sky’’), a neat 35-seater co-owned by Bryan Nelson, a former head chef at the esteemed A la Grecque in Aireys Inlet for three years. Nelson has also worked under Paul Raynor at the Stokehouse and Ryan Clift at Walters Wine Bar. The food is ‘‘unpretentious modern Italian’’, says co-owner Kate Dickins, a chef by training who runs front of house and takes charge of desserts.

Loved our dining experience at Ciao Cielo! Also liked the idea that it also caters to a more casual dining experience outdoors too. We didn’t make a booking and were lucky to have an available table! The venue itself has a beautiful ambience with its fittings, lighting and soft background music. Staff were friendly when they greeted us and shown to our table. Our food also came out in good time and I loved the flavour of the Inked pasta with spinner crab and chilli! I highly recommend it. Thank you for a wonderful evening and will definitely be back! I had a dinner here on a Friday night. The staff were extremely friendly and lovely. The restaurant is very wheelchair and pram accessible. We started off with the beef tartare and the freshly shucked oysters. The entree’s were so fresh and delicious.nWe ordered the shhh! Pizza and the organic gnocchi with oxtail ragu. Came in a weeknight so if wasn't too busy. Lovely warm atmosphere, with super comfy seats. Its a nod to the history of the venue, and staff take great pride in their work.nnFood was great. Tuna tartare lacked salt and a binding agent. Octopus was delicious.nnThoroughly enjoyed the wine, from an Italian region, which paired well with the food.
Pretty good spot for a dinner out. Close to Port Melbourne and St Kilda. Doesn't have a whole lot of indoor dining but does have plenty of outdoor dining. Although, it may not be ideal for winter date nights.nnHad some vegetarian food here. The pizza was great. Really strong on flavor and generous in size. The pistachio pasta was good, but lacked some flavor. The staff were nice and attentive and the food came out quickly.nnGood for a summer night. My guess is it would be packed during summer.
I took some friends visiting from NYC to Ciao Cello, and wow did it deliver! The food is next level, seasonal and full of flavour, like a little tour of Italy on a plate. You can tell there’s real passion behind every dish, and the menu changes to keep things interesting. The service was super friendly and welcoming, none of that stuffy, over-the-top vibe, just genuinely great hospitality. And let’s be real, a bonus shoutout to the head chef, Bryan—talented and easy on the eyes! hahaha My friends were seriously impressed, which says a lot. If you’re after incredible Italian food in Port Melbourne with a side of good vibes, this is the spot. Can’t wait to go back!
