I love visiting these gardens when I come to Castlemaine. Lots of ducks, plenty of benches to sit and relax, toilet facilities at both ends of the lake, beautiful flowers and a perfect place to relax and enjoy nature
What a great space this is. It was the day of the park run when we visited the Botanic Gardens in Castlemaine. I must admit it has been a while since we have been here. There were many volunteers going about their duty to assist with this weekly event at the time of writing Lake Joanna is a beautiful jewel in the crown of the Gardens, and a ‘must see’. The gardens also have old rare trees such as pines and oaks of great significance. The gardens themselves are one of Victoria’s oldest. In 1854 Frederick Hirschi, a nurseryman, requested the land for these gardens. Philip Doran was the first curator in 1866 and he held that position till his death in 1913. Well worth a visit to soak up all that is on offer. A mention must go to the Mount Alexander Shire for its great work and dedication to these gardens.Well done!
It was well cared for. There are lots of trees, ducks etc.nA children’s playground. Fountains around for easy access. I saw an elderly couple being cycled around the park in a sort of tuk tuk
The gardens surrounding Lake Joanna offer an opportunity to forget about life for a little while and surround yourself with nature. It was also good weather when I went so it was a lovely experience.nnA lap around the lake is nice for a short walk, though you could spend hours doing laps for exercise, or enjoying a picnic in the gardens. The flowers were beautiful and blooming when I visited in mid-september.
A beautiful botanic Gardens for this lovely country town. Great playground for the kids. Bridges over a little creek, lots of flowers and beautiful big trees. Large areas under shade with also big open areas. Nice location too, though next to the train line... Kids love it, but it is slightly loud think you'd get used to it though - and fur next to The Mill precinct. Would definitely spend more time at the gardens next time we visit!
