Cairns Tropical Zoo

Story

Cairns Tropical Zoo was a 6ha tropical zoo in Cairns, Queensland, Australia. It had a small collection of native and introduced species, and was a member of the Zoo and Aquarium Association (ZAA). It was owned by the Freeman family. The zoo opened in 1980 in a tranquil bushland area and grew to have the largest collection of animals in Far North Queensland. By 2015, the site was surrounded by suburbs and the zoo became a nuisance to local residents. The zoo closed on 31 March 2016 with the land sold to a local developer. Many of the animals were relocated to other zoos and wildlife parks also operated by the Freeman family, including Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures, Kuranda Koala Gardens and Birdworld Kuranda with $2 million being spent on creating new exhibits.

Easily accessed via local bus (Palm Grove); though crossing highway for return bus is dangerous! Zoo is small but packed with great variety and very friendly staff. Their experience is obvious as the activities are spaced out so you don't feel rushed. We availed of snake show, koala hugging, crocodile feeding, koala/wombat lecture, kangaroo feeding, and the most amazing bird show (important: no sudden movements; mind that child!). The koala hugging is special because this is not available in other Australian states. Cairns Tropical Zoo participates in a careness scheme that makes it possible, ensuring the koalas are not overworked. The zoo charges a fair price for their official of you and a koala, with a complimentary additional photo taken with your mobile. It is the cutest image ever. Food services are adequate, but could be better offering, quality and pricing. But sadly we learned that Cairns Tropical Zoo is set for closure in 2016, as no one has come forward to purchase it as an ongoing concern. Will probably mean relocation to owner's other parks in Kuranda and/or other zoos. So come here while you can!

The best place to get close to Australian animals -- yes, better than Sydney zoo! If you want to feed a kangaroo or pet a nice, friendly koala in a friendly, informal setting -- this is the place. Lots of koalas (that are active within meters from you -- not at a distance), kangaroos and wallaby pretty much roam the territory, crocodiles within a few meters from you -- all very well done with a good price and friendly personnel on top of it.

A very nice little zoo with mostly Australian animals. Unfortunately, it is apparently closing permanently as of today (1 April 2016, no joke!). Animals are being relocated to other zoos in the area.

Loved watching the crocs getting fed ! & the free flight bird show was brilliant ! If you get too hot , you can return free within 2 days of your visit. ..which was good for us,as the bird show had been cancelled on our initial visit. ..so we were able to return 2 days later. Well worth a visit!
