This is a great venue and really spacious, quiet on a Friday arvo. The staff are friendly and helpful. Grading is fair and reasonable.nMy only suggestion would be regarding the lighting. Some of the lights are extremely bright, and I found them a bit distracting when topping out on certain routes. It could also be a minor safety concern.
We took four 9 year olds climbing at BlockHaus Canberra for my son’s 9th birthday. Before going, I rang to ask about group deals, supervision ratios, and whether we could bring a small cake and use the seating area. The staff member on the phone was rude and dismissive, repeatedly telling me to “read the website” which I already had. They confirmed the kids could climb with one parent to two children and said we were welcome to use the seating area for cake, just that there were no designated party rooms.nnWhen we arrived, the staff were again incredibly rude. Within five minutes, we were told to keep the children quiet despite there being many other children there laughing and playing at the same noise level. The venue itself can be loud, with voices echoing everywhere and music playing, so the interaction felt unnecessary and targeted at children simply laughing and having fun.nnI later politely asked whether I could light a candle on the cake. I was completely understanding if the answer was no due to safety concerns and was more than happy not to light it, I simply thought I’d ask. Instead, I was abruptly told outside food was not allowed in the centre and they cannot facilitate cake eating, which by the way I had napkins disposable forks and a safety children’s knife. I checked the website afterwards and nowhere does it mention that outside food is prohibited. This also wasn’t communicated during my phone call when I specifically asked about bringing a cake and using the seating area.nnThe issue wasn’t even the rules. Businesses can have rules. It was the rude and dismissive customer service the entire time, with no apology for the confusion or effort to offer alternatives despite there being outdoor seating available.nnAfter years of poor experiences with staff here, we won’t be returning ever again.
I'm at the start of my climbing journey and the climbs here are by far the most approachable and motivating I've encountered. The staff are all incredible and it's such a diverse and inclusive space! I came here with a group of friends and we had so much fun trying out some of the harder level climbs and playing around the family haus! Very well maintained and the friendliest environment... will be back !!!
Nice place for a first bouldering experience! But also if you are an experienced person.nThe staff is super nice. Access for a day with shoe rental is 31 AUD.nThere is also a slack line.nThere are showers in the place with shower gel and shampoo available.nDefinitely a nice place to come to in Canberra!
such a great gym, as a beginner-mid level climber, i find the climbs in my grade to be challenging and exciting. i love when gyms don’t just set for the advanced ppl! it’s also got such a lovely and welcoming vibe and i low key want that poster wall at home. bonus points for the ice latte cups and friendly staff!nnpictured: me attempting and failing my first black climb
