Ballarat Botanical Gardens

Story

The Ballarat Botanical Gardens Reserve, located on the western shore of picturesque Lake Wendouree, in Ballarat, Victoria, Australia, covers an area of 40 hectares which is divided into three distinct zones. The central Botanical Gardens reserve in the 'gardenesque' style of the Victorian pleasure garden. On either side there are open parkland buffers known as the North and South Gardens. The Gardens celebrated its sesquicentenary (150 years old) in 2007.FeaturesThe gardens feature a large modern conservatory, returned Ex-POW war memorial, and the heritage statuary pavilion. The Stoddart Statue collection consists of 12 white marble figures from Italy donated by Thomas Stoddart in 1884. The 12 statues were figures from classical mythology: Spring, Summer, Autumn, Winter, Hercules, Pomona, Bacchante, Hebe, Flora Farnese, Leda, Mercury and Flora. They were badly damaged by vandals in 2002 and were placed in the statuary pavilion after repair. The statues were returned to their original 1884 pedestals in March 2010.A collection of bronze busts of all Australian Prime Ministers named Prime Ministers Avenue is set within Horse Chestnut Avenue. One of the founding fathers of Federation was Alfred Deakin who was the first Federal Member for Ballarat and the second Prime Minister. The first 12 busts were donated by Richard Crouch who also left a bequest to add further busts.

A very nicely set out Botanical Gardens. Well maintained. There is a lake nearby as well as a tourist tram. The Avenue of the Former Prime Ministers Statues along the main path in the gardens was interesting to see. It is a peaceful place to have a walk through or to sit and rest. Well worth a look to see.
A beautifully maintained and peaceful spot! Ballarat Botanical Gardens is nicely arranged and was already showing signs of vibrant life as it gets ready for the spring bloom. The avenue of former Prime Ministers' statues adds a historical touch. Plenty of black swans and coots from the nearby lake add to the charm. Great for a relaxed, scenic walk.
I recently spent the day at the Ballarat Botanical Gardens after stumbling across photos online and it was totally worth the trip! The location is super convenient, especially with the tram stop right across the road—so it’s really easy to get there if you don’t have a car. Once you walk in, the first thing you notice is the amazing scenery of Lake Wendouree right next to it. It’s such a stunning view and definitely sets a relaxing mood.nnI also really loved how there are a bunch of sheltered BBQ spots right along the lake, so it’s perfect if you want to cook up a casual lunch or just chill out for the afternoon. The gardens have very clean toilets, and I was impressed that they have good disability access too. It’s not something every place gets right, but here it’s clearly well taken care of.nnWhat really stood out to me are the incredible statues scattered around the park. There’s this big statue of Wallace that looks so impressive Plus, there are ducks and birds everywhere! It adds so much life to the gardens, and if you’re lucky, they’ll come right up close to you.nnOverall, I’d say the Ballarat Botanical Gardens is a great spot for anyone looking for a nice, relaxing day out. Whether you’re into picnics, snapping photos, bird-watching, or just enjoying a peaceful walk, this place has got something for everyone. I’d absolutely recommend stopping by if you’re ever in the area!

The most stunning and enchanting gardens in Melbourne. On a hot day, the smell of chicken fertilizer may churn your stomach, but the beauty of the place will keep you there.nI highly recommend and have been visiting for years. The grounds keepers always keep the gardens so beautiful and change the flowers per season so it's always different and beautiful. Locals respect this beautiful place too. There isn't rubbish or litter about which adds to the relaxing feel to the place. Grass is always green and always ample shade with the stunning trees.nThis place is like a step back in time and the smell of fresh trees with the fresh oxygen they provide is a serotonin release in itself. I highly recommend a picnic with the family here.
