Halal food. A little bit pricey for students > NZD 10 per meal. But the portion is quite big for asian standard, so it's possible to be shared. Taste OK.
Nice Malaysian place hidden on Mount Street between Symonds and Wakefield street. Tasty food at fairly cheap prices so it gets quite busy during lunch. Not too many tables and they are pack in quite close so it could get quite loud when full. Really friendly service so always wanting to come back for more.
Went there for dinner last night, Prawn Noodles was full of MSG, very thirsty after eating it. Roti Chanai was served with a small bowl of Chicken Curry which was not fresh at all, with two tiny pieces of chicken and potatoes pieces that had dissolved in the curry due to reheating many times, the curry was also very salty. Very unsatisfying dinner, would not recommend it to anyone.
Angie's kitchen has a great atmosphere and seems to be always packed with people. The prices are typical, slightly expensive for what they give me but given their location and my desperation, its not too bad. Be careful with what you choose because I think the chef is really good at making half the menu and the other half just tastes and feels slightly weird but besides that., its a nice place.
The name of a restaurant can usually shed a lot of information about the place. Angie's Kitchen is just that, a family run kitchen that serves up firm Malaysian favourites. However, the small kitchen is a two edged sword, it delivers a home cooked meal but when the crowd comes, all hell breaks loose. Having been here for years, capacity management has never and seemingly will never cross their mind. The wait during a busy lunch can stretch well over 30 minutes, leaving a lot frustrated Uni students rushing to go back to class. Seeing the stress on the staff to push out the meals year on year really makes you wonder if it's better to visit elsewhere than knowingly enter into a restaurant and accept a rushed dish after 30 minutes of waiting. Tip: If you see a hint of a crowd, it's best to turn elsewhere.
Today i with 3 other friends went to dine in at Angie's kitchen. I ordered Canai roti with Chicken curry. They served roti first had to wait 10 minutes, a lady then serves dal we thought it was complementary, i waited for another 20 minutes and asked the status of chieckn curry. The staff goes in and comes back and said they served dal instead of chicken. when i said i didnt asked for dal, he goes in again and brings in a small bowl of some curry sauce. I resisted it and the goes in again, the guy seemed bit stressed and saw him saying 'fu**'. i also saw the lady inside the kitchen being bit arrogant as well as not ready to accept they made a mistake. Then they serves the chicken a wierd smelly one, dont know if it has that small by default. I asked for an extra bowl of rice coz the roti was finished by then, the guy happily serves it by saying $1.50 extra. When we went to pay, they charged me $4 extra and when i asked they said it was for the extra chicken curry i ordered and rice was $2.50. Later they agreed to include the chicken curry with the meal but they would still charge me $2.50 for the rice. There has been lot of drama for a 25c dal they served by mistake and i honestly didnt like the taste of the food so do my friends. We decided we would never go back and have pretty my blacklisted them. Crap food, awefull service !!
Always a great place for quick meal. Real south east asian food. The service is good, the food is tasty and more importantly it's cheap. Great for students.
It is an alright restaurant if you want to get a taste of Malaysian food. Very friendly staffs, highly recommended if you're in the location :
Best malaysian in town - have been eating here since uni days. Authentic and not too salty with reasonable price
Wonderful customer service with a delightful menu. Loved the Laksa- extremely authentic although the Rendang left quite a bit to be desired.
