Story

The Yaldhurst Museum is located in the suburb of Yaldhurst, Christchurch, New Zealand, close to Christchurch International Airport, Riccarton Race Course and Ruapuna Speedway. The museum has a large collection of road transport vehicles, and it opened to the public in 1968.HistoryThe museum was established by Alfred Thornhill Cooper, also known as Jake Cooper. He began collecting vehicles in 1950 and in 1963 purchased his ancestral home Dudley House at Yaldhurst, to build his museum. The property had a two-story colonial style dwelling built in 1876, two stables and small shed on 8acre of land. Additional display and storage facilities were constructed, and the museum opened to the public on Boxing Day 26 December 1968. The original name was Yaldhurst Museum of Transport and Science.ExhibitsMany of the exhibits are displayed in their original condition and include cars, racing cars, commercial vehicles, motorcycles, scooters, power-cycles, horse-drawn carriages, bicycles, tractors, agricultural equipment, stationary engines, military items and fire engines. Also at the museum is the original Yaldhurst School building relocated in April 1984.

We had a great time visiting with our car club.
A good selection of items for a small museum, could use some TLC in the garden. Also some of the exhibits were outside where nature is hammering them to bits but very nice.
Nice museum. They have a big range of cars including a few racing cars, old technology including printers and computers and an old fire truck and station setup. Great place to take kids to.
Great place to look at older cars ... many are in the restoration process or past it but its still an adventure. If you go as a club usually you will be invited to working and storage areas others don't get a chance too .. well worth a look at and the coffee shop is nice too for a hot or cold drink and something light to eat
Good little transport museum. Great range of vehicles, housed in buildings around a courtyard. Would have been good if each exhibit could be walked straight through with an exit at the end instead of having to backtrack and go out where you came in. Has a cafe onsite which looked good, but we didn't eat there.
Nice little museum with interesting things to see and friendly and helpful staff. Can't speak for the cafe, had a pie and it was nice. I also did a blacksmithing course here which had to be the best location for it.
A somewhat tired museum, however some interesting exhibits. The gardens between each building are pleasant however can make visiting the different sites difficult in the rain.
A hidden gem... great museum. Check out the collection of fascinating cars, old horse drawn carriages, old racing cars and bikes, old print and computer technology plus a fire station. And a lovely cafe on site. Child friendly too
