THE BUSH NEWS
Twelve years experience in entertaining diverse audiences, ranging from kindergartens and school groups to the corporate functions and night entertainment held at Woodlyn Park in Waitomo, have given Barry Woods a.k.a Billy a taste for spreading our pioneer story.

Aware that New Zealand's pioneer history is fast disappearing, Billy Black is passionate about keeping it alive for future generations. With this in mind he has designed a travelling road show especially for schools. The Kiwi Culture Road Show is a totally professional, and highly interactive hour-long walk through the history of New Zealand's development from bush to farmland.

The Story of our forefathers felling and taming rugged bush into the lush pastureland that is New Zealand today, is interwoven and enhanced by vivid power point images, hands on interaction with technologies employed by the Bushmen, and Billy's natural humour. This is an all absorbing, fun and interactive show, which imparts knowledge and understanding of our pioneer history whilst motivating problem solving and thinking outside the square. Students discover the amazing strength of the Timber jack, experience the tension of log splitting, feel the grind of a wringer washing machine and other technologies used by New Zealand's early settlers.

The show concludes with a section on introduced animal species and here "Jonah" the rugby playing, Harley riding hog, a.k.a a kune kune pig, provides a fine finale to an awesome show.

Teachers and parents visiting the show at Woodlyn Park comment on the wealth of knowledge they've gained from the show.

Now for the first time, Billy Black brings Kiwi Culture, our history to your school!

Minimum charge $900.00 - can be made up by two schools booking from the one area

The different place to stay : the ship and plane + hobbits Hut. We loved the atmosphere. The weather was terrible and all trips were cancelled, but it has nothing to do with the great ideas and achievements by the operator and owner. It isn't your 5 star full serviced and all inclusive hotel, but a cool adventures place for families with kids. Fully equipped kitchen and lovely interior element. The boat was the highlight hotel room on our trip.
We stayed 2 nights with our three children in the front unit of the ship. Great photos online but in reality the ship looks run down and in dire need of re-painting. We had an adequate stay but felt it was over-priced. The ship rests near a small swampy base with an associated insect problem, both flying and crawling. Lots of fly spray was needed and in fact we had we had to evacuate briefly on our 1st night after 10pm after a neighbour accidentally set of a smoke alarm by spraying too close to a smoke detector. The inside is clean but has a strong unpleasant smell. The downstairs bedrooms are small and somewhat claustrophobic. The beds/chairs were uncomfortable due to mattresses that should have been replaced ages ago. The TV is an old fashioned box television. There is plenty of potential and hopefully upgrades will be made in the near future.
Rooms are basic but comfortable, definitely a fun experience staying in a ship! Location is great ~ good place to stay if you have hired a car to get around, cafe and pub 5 mins down the road. Very pretty place.Rooms: 3/5
Woodlyn Park offers a unique experience of staying in quirky rooms inside either a ship, train, plane or a Hobbit home. The location is quite remote but fairly close to the glow worm caves if that's on your itinerary. The road getting here was a bit bumpy and the road had quite the number of potholes, so be wary of that. The surrounding area is mostly farm so it does get fairly quiet with the occasional animal call here and there. We opted to stay in the cockpit of the plane for the night. It's quite amazing how the owner managed to get these large objects here considering how narrow the roads were. Upon first glance, the plane looks pretty run down, although some may say that's the novelty of it. The interior felt more like an old ship than a plane, asides the obvious cockpit. Inside you'll find all the basics you'll need including a kitchenette. The kitchen isn't so well equipped so it's best to get go out to grab a bite. There's not many restaurants in the vicinity, unless you want to make the drive back to civilization which is about a 15min drive for more restaurants and grocery stores. Breakfast is not included. There are two rooms in this unit, one on the main floor and another behind the cockpit area. The bed upstairs is a little hard to get in and out of, so if you need to frequent the washroom at night, this is not the room for you. And the fan/ventilator is quite loud as well, if you do choose to sleep on the lower level, the fan is still audible but slightly muffled. Parts of the plane are exposed and you'll see some of the yellow insulation. If you want to get a view of the night sky, the windows aren't well maintained so it's best to get step outside for an optimum view. The unit does have an odour to it, which can beat be described as old room smell. The showers are quite compact and you'll find yourself in a puddle when you shower as the drainage isn't perfect. The sitting area can get a little drafty as well, however there is a heater/AC unit in the room. Honestly, this place has its quirks but it's better served as a museum than a place to stay in, especially for the price. If you do choose to stay, onr night is plenty.
Worn down place, very unfriendly and not helpfull receptionist, told us to “fuck off”if we dont like it. Stinks like mildew in lower rooms, no AC , fans make a lot of noise. We left immediately. Dont book this.Rooms: 1/5
Excellent stop over from Auckland to New Plymouth for the family. Clean, tidy warm and peaceful. Lovely service from the Host. The Novelty Train carriage stay was exciting for the kids. Bathroom was huge and the beds very comfortable. A must stay, well recommended A+++Rooms: 5/5
If you've never slept in a ship, plane, train carriage or a hobbit house, then this is the place to do it. We stayed in the ship, there were 6 of us, we had the front unit of the ship, the cleanliness in the kitchen was a bit poor, but apart from that it was fine.Rooms: 3/5
Awesome historical experience! Dogs allowed, only $10 a night per self-contained vehicle. Was lovely.
Basic but cosy rooms, stayed in the hobbit houses, would be cool if you could make a fire somewhere as it’s cold but Great experience
I had no pen otherwise I would have left a review in the guest book in the room. My husband and I stayed in the train carriage room and it was great! Loved the privacy that it had along with the views and of course novelty of staying in an 1918 train carriage. Nice out door furniture set too. Great service and location.Rooms: 4/5
