The West Coast Wildlife Centre in Franz Josef is an essential stop for anyone traveling New Zealand's West Coast, particularly those who haven't yet seen the elusive kiwi in the wild. More than just an attraction, it is a crucial partner in conservation, making your visit feel both informative and impactful.nnThe Kiwi ExperiencenThe main draw is the opportunity to see one of New Zealand's most treasured and threatened birds: the Rowi and Haast Tokoeka kiwi.nnIn summary, the West Coast Wildlife Centre is an emotional, educational, and exciting experience. It provides one of the best opportunities in New Zealand to see the iconic kiwi and other unique native wildlife, all while knowing your money is going directly toward protecting these critically endangered species.
I visited this wildlife centre today. One of the kiwis was in it's little house, I heard it but did not see it, however I did see the other shy one. I also seen a tuatara at a distance. But the highlight for me was seeing the little blue penguins because of their clear visibility. They were in a very playful mood!
Great place for wildlife and conservation enthusiasts.nWe took the VIP backstage tour with the amazing Steve which includes additional explanations about how the center works, and is more enjoyable than just reading the posters.nBest to come in time for the penguins feedings 11 and 15, and the VIP tours 10, 12, 14, 16.
I don’t want to leave New Zealand with out see their iconic animals. So this site makes a good job as I see one of the two Kiwis they have in the dark room they have, the Tuatara and the little blue pingüin. Check the pictures!
We did the Vip tour and we found it very informative. Having experts teach you, in detail, about some of New Zealands native species was an great experience. We finally got to see a Kiwi, very cool.
