Story

Wenderholm Regional Park is the first regional park of the Auckland Region, New Zealand. Situated between the estuaries of the Puhoi River and the Waiwera River, on the east coast of New Zealand's North Island, the park features a homestead known as Couldrey House, and a carved pouwhenua. This park also features the 'Maungatauhoro Te Hikoi' walking track, starting at the carved pouwhenua near the Couldrey House. This walking track allows visitors to see scenic views and birdlife. The park has its own resident artist, and part is sectioned off for ecological restoration.HistoryFor approximately 1000 years Maori lived in the area now encompassed by the park because it featured several natural resources. The Auckland politician and entrepreneur Sir Robert Graham protected many of the ancient trees in the area from felling to be used for timber for ships. He went on to build a homestead in the park (now known as the Couldrey House). Many of the historic trees in the park were given as gifts to Robert Graham from George Grey. The park has a resident artist, Nic Moon, provided by Auckland Regional Council. Her role is to create works specifically for the site, including some that involve the trees themselves.Ecological restorationA section of the park has been set aside since 1965 for an ecological experiment, stopping livestock from grazing and repopulating the forests. This allowed native species of birds which were no longer in the area to be re-introduced in 1999. One of the first species released into the area Petroica australis longipes (North Island robins) has a generally high rate of survival and procreated a good number of young, unfortunately not high enough to compensate for the loss of the adult population. Whales such as Southern Right Whales may appear to rest and calve along the coasts. Dolphins may be visible from the shores as well.

Visiting Wenderholm Regional Park was a truly delightful experience. The park's stunning natural beauty, with its lush forests, beautiful golden fallen leaves and scenic coastline, provided a perfect escape from the hustle and bustle of city life. The well-maintained walking trails offered picturesque views at every turn, and the peaceful ambiance made it a great place for relaxation and reflection. The facilities, including picnic areas and clean restrooms, were well-kept and convenient. Overall, Wenderholm Regional Park is a gem of a destination, perfect for nature lovers, families, and anyone seeking a serene outdoor getaway.

The entire park is so gorgeous. There is so much space and loads of areas to park up and camp, have a bbq, picnic, relax, swim and go for on walks. We did the Perimeter track walk and it was lovely. The views at different points were stunning. I would highly recommend visiting this park!
It's a lovely place to chill out with friends and family, vast space for a picnic, nice beach that connects to a river. We did the track that was 1.5 hours, starting at the park and rounds to the Waiwera beach. The historic Couldrey house right in the park was interesting to see, a newsletter how the place evolved from different owners tells the story of the park.
Very nice park. No admission charged. Pretty trees. Nice views. Trail locations shown on Google maps not entirely accurate. Nice flat beach with swimmable water. Some spelling errors on signs, “Bach” was a composer, I think the sandy thing is spelled “beach.” Government is proud that they “cleverly” do not provide trash bins, so naturally some people drop their drink cans etc where they wish, so I picked up a few scattered about and carried them to the park bathroom — sometimes government theories don’t pan out, trash bins would lead to a cleaner park, duh.
Great summer destination. Lots of people were here over new year so parking space was really tight. Overall, great to see everyone enjoying outdoors.
This is the second time I've went here. The first was eventful and I got to see some small crustaceans and molluscs in the rock pools. However, this time, because of the windy conditions –therefore high tide– I didn't get the chance to see the marine animals. There were also lots of dead, washed up animals on the shore I had spotted 4 dead fish and a couple echidnoderms. Furthermore, watch out for a pair of oystercatchers who will screech and intimidate you; they seem to be guarding a nest.
Good place for a casual hiking and walking. Wonderful place for Barbecue
Great walking tracks with awesome views up & around this regional park, beach is great for picnicking & swimming, plenty of shade under the many picnic spots.
Went in winter can get muddy. Clean modern toilet facilities. 4 walking tracks. With a combination of stairs, track, and board. Keep an eye up for bird life and Listen to the birds sing while enjoying the view. Stretch of beach with people fishing at low tide. The museum is only open over the weekends from 1 pm - 4 pm. Admission fee adults $5 children free.
