The Warkworth & District Museum constantly develops and changes displays that give an insight into the lives and pursuits of New Zealand's pioneering families nnOn the first floor they have recreated rooms from the 1920s such as a corner store kitchen bedroom, wash house, and post office nnMy mum's first job was working it the post office telephone exchange I can't believe they used to manually connect people with wires and you had to book a line nnThe ground floor tells the story of the kauri tree and the people who developed industries to harvest the rich resources of our ancient kauri forest These are lovely displays of local history and is beautifully presented nnThe ladies at reception were just lovely nnIt is situated next to the magnificent Parry Kauri Park Unfortunately I was just feeling too hot and bothered to explore their many tracks and walkways. But it's a good excuse to come back on another day to experience the native bush and kauri tree grove
Enjoyed this little museum so much. The exhibits are set out and displayed brilliantly. The information was excellent. Loved the balance of the museum which included everyday aspects of New Zealand history and culture, not just limited to certain things. Also the local past Kauri industry was covered and explained well. Very nostalgic looking at some of the olden day items.
Beautiful Serene place with ForestnAnd Museum which reminds us of our old 3rd generation.Lovely place to visit on your way to Bay of Island from Rotorua/Auckland
Most especially loved the board walk in amongst the Kauri trees. Plenty of bird song too saying it's alive and well. Adding to it's sense of cool serenity
Outside is a very impressive big Kauri called The McKinney Kauri- 800 years old. Height to first limb 11.89m, Center girth 7.62. Another large one can be seen close by.nThere is a boardwalk trail through the Kauri forest that starts next to it. It is a beautiful, tranquil walk with Kauri trees, tree ferns and bird calls, made that much better by us being the only ones there.nAdmission to the museum is $7 for adults. It has an eclectic collection concerning forestry, mining, minerals, women’s accomplishments, some Maori artifacts and history, European settlers history, stories and artifacts, old cameras, etc.nThere is a video of local history that is interesting and worth taking the time to view.nUpstairs there are displays of old shops and a school.nOutside there is a 1900 outhouse, a tiny 1867 post office, Warkworth’s 1912 jail, two US military WWII era huts- all of which can be entered.
