Story

Waiotapu is an active geothermal area at the southern end of the Okataina Volcanic Centre, just north of the Reporoa caldera, in New Zealand's Taupo Volcanic Zone. It is 27 kilometres south of Rotorua. Due to dramatic geothermal conditions beneath the earth, the area has many hot springs noted for their colourful appearance, in addition to the Lady Knox Geyser, Champagne Pool, Artist's Palette, Primrose Terrace and boiling mud pools. These can mostly be viewed through access by foot, and in addition to a paid and curated experience, naturally forming hot springs appear around the area. The geothermal area covers 18 square kilometres. Prior to European occupation the area was the homeland of the Ngati Whaoa tribe who descended from those on the Arawa waka.
The area has a long history as a tourist attraction. While the area has been protected as a scenic reserve since 1931, a tourist operation occupies part of the reserve under a concession. It operates under the name \"Wai-O-Tapu Thermal Wonderland\". The business was bought in 2012 by Te Arawa Group Holdings, a local Maori tribal business, from the Sewell/Leinhardt family, who had run it for 30 years.

The geyser tour is a typical tourist spot and I couldn't recommend. But the thermal area is very nice.
For those who have never experienced thermal springs, it is a very cool experience and in my opinion better than Yellowstone. In addition they also have a nice gift shop on site . Overall worth the visit.
Unfortunately it was closed when we visited so wasn't able to see the natural wonders here.
Had the most amazing experience here! Spent my 23rd with family wandering the park for the day and the staff went above and beyond to make my day special. I will go here again and would suggest everyone else goes here to explore!! Most incredible day. Thanks Waiotapu staff!
The place is wonderful. It is incredible way to learn about geography, chemistry and history.
Amazing experience with helpful and friendly staff. The walking tracks and information boards are safe and well constructed and the thermal ponds, craters and formations outstanding. Take the extra time to view the lake at the end of the track. Thoroughly recommend.
You can see all the beautiful thermal pools while enjoying the nice walk. Pathways are in good condition and safe.
This would be on my top 10 natural attractions list world wide. Every time I thought I couldn't see something else amazing I turned a corner and was blown away. So well set out and great value for money if you're a nature lover. Can't wait to go again.
