Wonderful, place to walk and enjoy nature there's major planting which volunteers pick a space to plant and look after. The walking path is very good and the wooden walkways to. Lots of bird life and very scenic walk.
Well worth visiting and a pleasant easy walk, ride, or wheelchair and pram pushing venture. The tracks are well sign posted and with Scenic views. Added to this walk is educational information on the local environment and effects of man on this area
More than 60 species of birds are found here, including banded dotterel, pukeko, dabchick, and variable oystercatcher.nnRoyal spoonbills are a regular visitor and feed in the shallow waters of the estuary. The birds depend upon the constant movement of the river and the tide which opens up twice a day to reveal a feast of worms, shellfish and crabs.nnDotterel - an endangered bird - nest in the flat sand and they're so small that you won't even notice a nest until you're upon it.nnThe New Zealand dotterels nest on the estuary sandspit between the river and the sea.nnWatch where you walk!
Good place to capture pictures of Birds.nI went after a days work and was just in time before sunset. Approached from the Manly Street end. A short boardwalk takes you to the estuary.nnLot of previous walkways have now been re-routed to give the NZ Dotterels a chance to breed. There is plenty of birds to be found. Variable Oystercatchers, Spoonbills, Gulls, Ducks of many variety. Lots and lots of swallows etc.nnPeople were catching fish at the mouth of the estuary and getting lucky.nnLoved this short trip. Will surely come back.nThis is a fragile eco-system. Please respect the signs. Dogs need to be on leash in many places.
This is a pretty estuary area found onnthe Kapiti Coast. The area has lots of plants, dunes and birds. It is great for a walk along the tracks and down to the water, both the Waikanae River and the sea. There are dome great views of Kapiti Island from the beach.
