We visited the Hemi Matanga reserve early September. We did Te Au Route. It takes us approximately 3h30 to complete with stops. The track starts on Tui Cres Road. On the middle of the street, you will see a Doc sign, you cannot miss it. There are plenty of space to park on the street. The major part of the tramp is in the Bush but you will have a few views of Kāpiti Island and the valley. The start of the walk is very pretty with a bridge above a river in a beautiful forest scenery. Then we regretted to not have our hiking poles with us as the way was going up and down very steeply, with a lot of roots to cross. Also this tramp is not a loop, so you have to walk back in the village to reach your car on Tui Cres Road.
A very steep and challenging trek. Predominantly uphill through bush. It takes around 1 hour 15 minutes of slow walking with rest stops, to get to the lookout.
Full of palms. Easy track.nCan hear cars throughout the bushwalk,nBut my goodness the kowhai tree at the south entrance was covered with tui
Great place for a short stroll or longer lookout walk. The meandering Falls are perfect for photos and to relax
This is a fabulous area of bush. We walk up the Parata track a couple of times a week and it is great exercise. The Au track, which joins on to this track, is more of a tramping experience. I recommend starting this track at Huia St so you go up the really steep bit.
