What a fun train ride! My kids 5 and 8 and I rode the train one-way from Waihi to Waikino and started our cycling trip from there to the Tunnel. From there all the way back to Waihi we stopped at the Waikino Station for some ice-cream, they have a cute little cafe. The train looks great, is clean, and staff is very friendly. Tickets are affordable $41 for one adult, 2 kids, 3 bikes, one-way. We definitely recommend this trip to other families. The kids and I really enjoyed it.
Fun train ride for families, our 4 year old couldn't stop talking about it! He especially loved how all the cars and trucks tooted their horns whenever we came close to the road. The volunteers do a fantastic job too and make the ride even more enjoyable. We stopped over at Waikino for a delicious lunch and then returned to Waihi.

Tucked away down Wrigley St, the wee Waihi train station full of character and old time nostalgia. Take the kids for a ride to Waikino and back enjoy the country scenery. It is funny to watch all the adults on the train waving to the cars going past and all the cars honking back. There a little bit of kid still in all of us!
Great train ride for kids & adults. The train is in great condition, I loved the decor of the carriages. We took first trip, the train stops long enough for a coffee and scone at the cafe and a bathroom break and then returns. Or you have the option of catching it back at another time. Our kids loved it 3 & 7. We went for pure scenic and experience reasons.
It was lovely to have vehicles toot their horns or wave Hi to the train passengers. Very lovely of them to do that : Only thing was when we got to Waihi, there's nothing much to see around the train station.
Awesome family experience, cafe's at the Waikino end is reasonable. Was around $22 return for an adult and 2 year old.
We had a great family experience today on the Goldfields railway. 5 adults and a 3 year old who was very excited to travel on a train. Recommend it highly.
Great experience for any age. Lovely slow train ride to Waikino where they have good refreshments. Tea, coffee, ice creams, lunches etc
Second time here. We stay in the campground in our caravan, do the rail trail cycle ride and take the train back from Waikino. The campground is basic but a bargain with powered sites $15 a night for family of four, right at the train station and start of the rail trail. Toilets are clean if basic bring a torch for nighttime!. Water is available from tap inside the men's toilet block at least that was the only one we could find. No dumpstation on site but the public one is very nearby. Felt safe with houses all around. Love it and will come again.
