Went with little to no expectations about the food and service however, pleasantly surprised with how good the service was! The staff was very pleasant, cheerful and nothing was too much trouble for her. She went out of her way to make meals gluten free and checked for any dietary restrictions. The food was good but the service made the dining experience a lot more enjoyable!
Lovely place. Nice campsite but the sites are on very steep slopes for a campsite. Also powered sites are rock hard so no tent camping with power unless you have a big RV. Be aware that you cannot use the kitchens and bathrooms between 11 and 2 which is quite strictly enforced by the staff. First we got notification 3 minutes before 11 that we had to finish breakfast. Then I was requested to leave the shower at 2.10 since they were not ready yet. I understand having to clean but not allowing to use the bathroom for hours on end is a bit too much to ask IMHO. Scenery makes up for some of it.
This place was great for a light lunch, and a coffee out of the wind.. Very pleasant staff, and we didn't check out the full range of food. The sea side experience is fantastic, and the ability to roam over it is just wonderful. I expect it will get locked down at some point, as I'm not sure how sustainable such access is. We were there for a low tide. At high tide, I think you'll see much much less. The yellow-eyed penguins are around only at dusk or dawn, and I am nervous about disturbing any of such a small population. There are only 300 breeding pairs - this is marginal.
In general, we liked the place. Staff was friendly, cakes tasted good. The only thing we were surprised about was the way they serve coffee - cocoa and sugar were basically all over the plate and it didn't look good in our opinion.
Tumu Toka CurioScape is a place where you can relax, thing and plan your trip in the nice atmosphere. Restaurant & Cafe - breakfast was delicious; coffee was good. It was nice start point even we had rain and cold from early morning. Museum is wonderful. We could enjoy short, high quality films about animals, forest, local people. We were fascinated by the film about things that local people made from ocean algae and tree bark and what ‘ancient fish’ they found in the local rivers! How they live together with nature! My 4 years old daughter was fascinated by everything at the exhibition! We had learning and fun time together! Thank you the crew of the Tumu Toka CurioScape!
Great location to have a breakfast while touring the coast. The best breakfast sausage I have had in a long time! Tastes as good as it looks!
Great asset to Curio Bay! The new cafe and interactive museum are an asset to Curio Bay! Great to finally have a restaurant there and they're also planning guided walks etc. I had the seafood chowder and it was delicious!
A nice warm place for a snack and to warm up from the outside. There’s also a little paid video viewing and petrified samples to see. I didn’t go and check that out but we did walk around to the petrified forest and onto the waterfront to view the penguins. We were told the rare yellow eyed penguins can be viewed after 6 pm and they were there on the clock!
Awesome natural campground right by the beach. We swam with dolphins on our first swim, an unforgettable experience. I had an amzing meal of eye fillet with rissotto cake and I'm still thinking about it at the restaurant for New years eve dinner, and took a learning journey through The Gateway, an interactive museum. Highly recommend supporting this, great for all ages. Also checked out the petrified Forrest. Heaps to see and do here. Favourite part of our trip through the Catlins so far.
It was a very hot day when we stopped to visit the Petrified forest at Curio Bay. After exploring the coast, we had a cold drink at Tumo Toka. Good range of beverages. The Iced Coffee was ok - could have been stronger and if the iced had been blended it would have been amazing. A fantastic place to stop if you are visiting the Catlins - the Petrified Forest is well worth a look. The cafe is tidy and roomy and worth a visit also.
