We have rented a sleeper van from 01.11-30.11.22 and can definitely give a 5 star rating! At first we were kind of scared to rent a camper here because of the negative reviews. We were told that the team and management has totally changed this year and they are trying to offer even better service now. The staff was extremely friendly from the beginning to the return. We had to call 2 times the service center because we had once an issue with the fridge and then a small accident. Both times staff was directly available on the phone and very helpful. The sleepervan itself was very new, well equipped and clean. We had an amazing time and want to say thank you!
We hired a sleepervan as a couple for a month. The van was in good condition and was great for our trip! It was self contained certified so we could freedom camp which was great. If you're staying more than a month I would maybe suggest getting a bigger sized camper than the sleepervan as it can be difficult when it's raining to cook and make the bed up. In the sunshine though the van was fantastic! If we come back to NZ we would book with Tui again.
We hired out the campervan for 7 days & went as far as Twizel & stayed at Lake Ruataniwha, van was extremely comfortable & very well equipped. Our van was also tidy & spacious, we had no problem with the vehicle at all during our travels. We will be using this service again but would like to go a lil bigger in size. Thank you very much Tui Campers for making our travels safe. Job well done guys
We're lucky this wasn't our first campervan experience, otherwise we'd probably never hire one again. If you can spare a couple of minutes, I might just save you a lot of pain and despair. If you can't spare a couple of minutes then the short version is, the vans are terrible quality and the customer service is generally non-existent. Our 6 week trip started in Christchurch and finished in Auckland. We had a 2 berth Trail-Seeker. In occurring order, our issues were as follows: 1. Hose fitting didn't fit the first campsite so had to buy an adaptor from a hardware store. 2. The hoses provided have been cut shorter so we often had to park awkwardly to reach the tap. 3. Driving on the winding roads towards Milford Sound, the van suddenly and completely shut down, losing steering and brake ability. Luckily we managed to safely pull over and hitch-hike to find some phone signal. Called the AA emergency helpline but found out our van wasn't registered for emergency pick-up. Eventually arranged for a mechanic to pick us up. Ended up staying in the mechanic's carpark for 3 days before it was fixed. 3 days refunded 4. Not long after leaving the mechanic's, a new light appeared on the dash. The brake pads were wearing thin and although not an emergency they needed to be changed soon. This issue occurred after 4pm on a Friday so we weren't able to contact Tui for another 3 days because they only operate Mon - Friday 9am-4pm with no out of hours contact. 5. Again while driving, the van suddenly had very limited power and another light appeared on the dash. The van could no longer go beyond 2,000 rpm. We were travelling through a mountainous valley at the time so this was a difficult and stressful situation to manage. 6. At this point we asked Tui to swap our van with another of the same model instead of wasting more of the trip parked up at a mechanic. They agreed and we drove back 100km to Christchurch, where our trip originally began. 1 day refunded 7. New van, similarly dangerous issue. The engine cut out whilst driving at 60kph. It turned back on once we came to a stop but it did this multiple times. Again this happened on a weekend so we had to wait until Monday to report the issue. 8. Tui booked us in with a mechanic but the nearest one was another 2 days ahead. When we turned up on Wednesday morning, having waited an extra 2 days, we were told there was no booking made by Tui so we had to wait until the end of the day to see if the mechanic could squeeze us in. Luckily they could and they replaced the battery. 1 day refunded 9. The toilet stopped working, it no longer flushed. We still had 2 weeks of the trip left so I contacted Tui about it and they said to just use the shower to flush. No apologies given and no compensation offered. 10. We encountered a lot of rain in the North island and the van leaked a considerable amount of water. We often woke to cold drips on our face during the night and had to use what we could to plug the gaps. 11. The fridges in both vans were barley cold and the temperature couldn't be changed. Milk wouldn't last more than a few days before we had to throw it out. 12. We were told that the $6000 bond would definitely be returned within 14 days. Once 14 days came and went I had to call multiple times to eventually get it processed. Mix all that in with some terrible customer service and you've got a pretty good idea of what your Tui experience could be like. If you still opt to go with them then best of luck. Despite Tui's best efforts, we had an amazing time and didn't let it dampen our spirits. 100% recommend New Zealand and it is the perfect place for a working campervan.
To avoid in any case ! In January 2020, we decided to rent a van for Summer 2020. Unfortunately covid pandemic arrived, we couldn't come to new Zealand. Tui campers never reimburse us, they only offer 1 year extension meaning summer 2021.... but New Zealand in 2021 was still closing its border. They are the worst car rental ever !!
We drove around South Island in the sleepervan for 14 days, we had no issue with the van. Everything works fine and the communication was prompt with Tui team. The sleepervan was fully equipped. I suggest check the utilities inside the van first, before buying any items for the trip. It was a good experience!
Although i do feel sympathetic towards past reviewers for their unfortunate experiences, the quality of service i received from tui campers in my recent and first ever campervaning trip was awesome. They provided a much needed affordable option for campervans that was priced competitively. On pick up, we were glad to see a well maintained, new-ish looking ford transit custom with all the facilities we needed functioning well eg heater, shower, fridge, gps all fitted nicely into that relatively smaller vehicle. Just take note that the adventurer 2+1 berth has very limited water capacity so it might be hard to shower even while freedom camping. Having driven ~2000km about south island, i find the van to be comfortable to drive with good reliability as it did not give me any issues at all throughout. Thanks, Tui campers! Will definitely look to rent from you guys again next time.
Possibly the worst company I have dealt with. Was sent quotes and had booked and paid the deposit for a particularly van. Me and my partner went on to book flights corresponding and change flights to suit these dates and 24hrs later they have cancelled our booking and said the van is unavailable. This has put us out of pocket with no other vans available with a bad system in saying you have a van and the next day no longer.
Hello! We were a little scared since the reviews are not that high but we had a great time using the campervan. It was great overall! The great things that we liked : Very clean campervan Every tool that you could need is in the van Cleaned sheets and towels Easy to drive Tui explained to us what to do as we are foreign it was very helpful. I wanted to put 4 and a half stars but I couldnt. Little things that needs to be improved so it's a five star company : The table that we rent was broken and dirty. I think it's just a mistake so easy to fix for next times We didn't have enough gas bottles so when we run out of gas in the rain and cold we were a bit confused haha Thanks to the amazing staff at the end who made our final trip weekend with smiles and good spirit. Definitely hire a car then next time! Agathe
when I Booker with Tui Campers I was a little scared given all the negative reviews, but for my part I wanted to put a good review but when I returned the vehicle clean and cleaned I presented the invoice for the repair of a flat tire of $ 35 they refused to refund me while it is written on their website: "Although we run late model vehicles, it may happen that small repairs are required. Repairs up to NZ$100 may be affected without authorisation and will be reimbursed upon presentation of a receipt. For amounts over NZ$100, Tui will need to be informed in advance. Repairs will be approved provided the customer was not directly responsible for the damage. Receipts must be submitted for any repair or the claim will not be paid."it's really a shame to do that, the boss is not a trader and doesn't seem really friendly on the Christchurch agency, especially since I had rented the van for 45 days.
