This is a hidden gem! I joined the paid walking tour and learned so much about the history of meat export in NZ. The tour guide was very informative and obviously passionate about this place. The tea and scones set is great, easily the best scone I ever had. They also have an area with various breeds of sheep, along with info labels about each breed. I felt this place is very well maintained by a passionate team, I hope this place gets more publicity for more people to enjoy the experience.
Well worth the visit . Very clean toilets , reasonable parking available . Allow 1--2 hrs . Ice-cream and cake available.
Absolutely fantastic place to visit! Highly recommend doing a work event there, as the catering is next level fantastic! Cater to all sorts of dietary requirements. Lovely place to go & should be a number on stop when going to Oamaru!Visited onWeekday
A beautiful place to stop on the way to/from Oamaru. I ordered one coffee and the man gave me 2 cups so I could share the pot of coffee with my partner. It was lovely sitting in the sun, admiring the cute cat Barney and the Victorian style building. Will definitely be back here.
It was great time visit Totara Estate and see history behind the first frozen meat shipment. Definitely recommend to do small hike on the hill where is the monument.
A wonderful slice of history. Well preserved by a group who obviously take great pride in their role. The buildings are well maintained and the historical information is easy to view and understand. I visited as part of Oamaru's Victorian festival and hourly enjoyed my visit. I believe the buildings are available for events such as weddings and I could see that it would be a special place especially with accommodation so close in Oamaru. I would recommend this site to others.
Our family saw the memorial and sign on the side of the road and decided to head in. We were not disappointed. We found a gorgeous collection of restored Victorian farm buildings, amazing local and New Zealand history, and a team enthusiastic about the farm, the animals and willing to tell the area's story. Price was reasonable for entry and there was enough to keep our young kids interested. Well worth the stop. You won't regret it
A lovely afternoon of high tea, homemade cakes, classical piano and a bit of history. We were so delighted to have stumbled upon this little gem just in time for their monthly Sunday teatime, complete with fine china, costumed waitstaff, and delectable desserts. Ralph on the piano was sensational. We had a wonderful time experiencing something out of the ordinary here on the outskirts of Oamaru — so wonderful, in fact, that we were even featured in the local paper see photo. I would definitely recommend a visit to Totara Estate! You won’t be disappointed.
Fascinating story of the first frozen meat export from New Zealand on a Victorian period farm with authentic tea and scones!
Awesome place for getting a feeling of the history of New Zealand! Highly recommend coming here Wait timeNo wait
