In this series we meet the whānau of Ngā Puna o Waiōrea, one of the country’s top Māori immersion units based at Western Springs College in Central Auckland.
The strive for excellence is their guiding principle whether it’s in the classroom, on the sports field or onstage – the students are encouraged to give it their all in everything they do!
In recent years, the rumaki has become a powerhouse in Māori performing arts with their senior kapa haka team coming second at the Secondary School’s Nationals in 2016 and also at the 2017 ASB Polyfest Competition.
Over the next few months the unit will face some of their biggest challenges to date, both locally and internationally.
We’ll meet the kaiako and kapa haka tutors who are dedicated to seeing their students overcome all obstacles and succeed, no matter what! Alongside the student leaders who are embarking on the busiest year of their lives so far.
We’ll follow their journey from the classroom and streets of Auckland to the world stage and back.
This is their story – this is The Puna!!
