We had a fantastic time at the Kiwi centre. The staff were incredibly friendly and welcoming, even delaying the start of the eel feeding to allow a coach load of tourists the opportunity to watch it.nThey were attentive and knowledgeable, explaining how the Kiwis habitat is set up to best replicate the real world while in captivity. Being able to see two Kiwis was really special.nThe eel talk was fascinating and it was an added bonus being able to feed and stroke the eels! The Cray fishing was also good fun.nDefinitely recommend coming here while in Hokitika for an interesting and different experience.
We had a wonderful experience at the National Kiwi Center. We went there pretty late yesterday and missed the feedings but had an amazing time with the kiwi. We were invited to come back the next morning at 10 a.m. for the feeding of the eels and the kiwis.nnIn the beginning, we were not so much interested in the eel feeding and were more looking forward to the kiwi experience. As it turned out, the eel feeding was very interesting, and we learned a lot from the explanations on this of the staff. Also, the kiwi was super cute to watch from very close by, even without a window or anything in between. We even heard them make their sounds a few times.nnWe can highly recommend visiting this animal center, which has a very reasonable price point and size compared to the other centers we passed by already. All the staff throughout are very kind, helpful, and very welcoming.
Was warmly greated and brief by Darren. He was very knowledgeable! Exterior the place look very small, but it wasn't at all. The kids had a blast time learn about kiwi and the other animals there. No photos were allows in the kiwi area but we definitelt got to see them. Darren shared with us about these kiwi gender. Will not be a spoiler, be there to ask him!!!!. There was engaging animal interaction, from catching crawlies and feeding the eels. Event our infant had a small area where he could play and have some fun. Highly recommend!!!
We had such a great time at the National Kiwi Centre! It was the only place where we were able to get really up close to two male kiwis, and we were lucky enough to see them show off their masculinity with a little standoff — such a rare and fascinating sight. We also loved the hands-on experience of fishing for native freshwater koura. You can’t take them home, but it was awesome to see them alive and learn more about them. Overall, it’s a fantastic spot to visit, especially when the weather isn’t great outside. The hosts were also friendly and welcoming.
We stopped in to see the kiwi. We were greeted by the gentleman behind the counter who was very friendly and helpful.nGot there just in time to see the giant eels being fed. Karen who was the lady talking about the eels was lovely . Answered our many questions without hesitation or annoyance. We had the opportunity to fed the eels and touch them. Straight after it was kiwi feeding time and again Karen was the one that was feeding them and again told us all about them.nWe are so glad we stopped in and would definitely recommend if in Hokitika.
