Came at 10.30pm, only a very short walk. Please it quiet and no bright flashlight or torch as it'd scare them. Walked in total darkness so keep it to the left to avoid bumping to others but lots of beautiful glowworms at the end. Recommend to visit at night only.
As it was our second time seeing glow worms, after taking a tour on the north island, it was fabulous to see that this place shows glow worms in a natural environment and completely free! Just 1 minute walking from the parking, and you already see the amazing creatures.nnWe came back when it was daylight as well, and was amazing to see how the environment is that they live in!
A wonderful experience to see the Glow Worm particularly at night. Starry sky for free. Just a min walk in the dark from the carpark but remember to keep left and your torch downward.
The Glow worms are so cool, like nature's lightshow. You need too see this in person as it is amazing and photos do not do the beauty justice at all. Be sure to wait around till at least an hour after sunset because as the night gets darker there seems to be more and more. I went just on sunset initially and there was only a couple of glowworms starting to glow. However an hour later there where thousands everywhere. I left soon after this but imagine there would be more and more come out as the night gets darker. Also everyone seemed to be very respectful staying quiet and not using torchs or phone flashes and minimising scrèn brightness. A must do when you are visiting or staying in and around Hokitika.
Very cool free experience to see glow worms! Just a short one min walk in the dark from the parking lot before you’re able to see any. May take a second or two to let your eyes adjust to see them all, and remember to turn OFF your flash if you tend to take photos as there were a few around us who forgot. Well worth a quick stop if you’re in the area.
