The Glen Afton Line - Heritage Railway

About

Catch a train pulled by locomotives of days past through the bush and along the hillside! Passenger trains run 1st Sunday of the Month.

Story

Come for a ride through the bush with us! Ride the rails on working examples of New Zealand's engineering heritage. Explore the sheds sidings, seeing many rare and historic locomotives, rolling stock and stationary items we've saved from around the region. Have a relaxing picnic lunch by the station. An enjoyable day out is waiting for the young and young at heart!

Passenger trains run on public Open Days held on the 1st Sunday of the month from April till December inclusive. There's someone around the junction most days if you want to have a look around and explore the sheds.

The Glen Afton Line is a heritage railway operated by The Bush Tramway Club Inc., a volunteer railway preservation group founded to save and restore steam equipment from the "bush tramways" of sawmill around New Zealand. This later expanded to locomotives from many other industrial sectors. We now operate passenger trains on the former coal mine serving Glen Afton Branch Line. We've slowly been restoring the decommissioned line and have nearly reached Glen Afton once more.

If you're interested in helping us, whether it be restoring locomotives, repairing track, trimming the bush along the line, selling tickets, putting out the word about open days, cooking sausages or of course driving the passenger train, come and talk to us. Young or old, we'd love to have you!

"Volunteer-run heritage railway. Runs on the first Sunday of every month. See Facebook or website for details."

Wow!! This place is definitely a must do and it's perfect for all ages. At least one train is wheelchair/Stroller friendly. The staff are so welcoming, the locomotives look and sound amazing. And all of this is so affordable. What an absolutely fun day out! My hats off to the club that provides this to the public and keeps the trains and track running smoothly.
I had a very pleasant experience at Glen Afton, the staff and volunteers were very chill and felt no pressure when exploring, taking the train and taking photos prior to the rides. I went expecting disorganization but it was nothin but that, the schedule was so well done. A great place for children to get a chance in their lifetime to ride a steam train since nowadays it has been phased out. The train station could play the Thomas the Tank Engine theme song to bring back some nostalgia to some older kids like me. All in all , cheap and fun and accessible for all ages. Highly recommend to leave a spot in your schedule for this once a month joyride.
A great day out if you are interested in vintage machinery or steam locomotives. It is club of volunteers who have maintained and restored a unique collection of NZR engines. On their open days, get there early to secure a carpark otherwise you will be walking up a steep road!
First of all a big thank you to Dave! what a great ambassador for your Club, he made us feel very welcome and showed us around. What can i say..... the area is amazing and it takes you back in time to were life was grand. there is an open day on the first Sunday of the month so ill be back to take a ride!
What a lovely day out with the dogs! Really great people.
We heard about this activity from a Facebook post. Obviously many others had too! Today was a warm autumn day and we arrived 9:40am for the 10am train ride, on purchase of tickets $15 adult, <5yrs free we were told first train ride is full. I asked if they were keeping count and we’d be guaranteed a ride on the second run of the train ride, as small children don’t enjoy an hour wait. Perhaps the staff were not expecting the large number of people and I am certain there were people buying tickets at 9:45am and didn’t get to ride until 12. Maybe this will be something they will reflect on after the large visitor numbers today. Other wise a fun outing for all ages, food and toilet facilities. Highly recommend.
We come here almost every month, its a wonderful relaxed day out and the food is pretty good as well.
Need more work on passenger control, some families been waiting for more than one hour and couldn't get on the train. Should consider hook more trailers when getting too busy. Good to have some car park marking near the entrance too.
A brilliant ride and having a cuppa and cake also added old world charm. The two rides avaliable are short but the history and knowledge of locals make it worth while.
We have been there a good number of times. The personnel running the trains and those selling food make sure the whole family has a good time. I totally recommend this for children and their parents and grandparents.
