The Brook Sanctuary

About

A community based initiative working to restore a pest free wildlife sanctuary close to Nelson, New Zealand.

Story

Imagine a place... where native plants and animals thrive, without threat from introduced pests. ... alive with birdsong, where rare species such as kiwi, tuatara and kakapo roam freely. ... where you can get involved and make a difference. ... where visitors can see native flora and fauna close to home.

Mission

The Brook Waimarama Sanctuary is a registered charitable trust and a community-based initiative working to create a pest-free wildlife sanctuary close to the Nelson city centre. Integral to creating the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary is a pest-proof fence over 14km long that encloses the area. The last pest mammals were removed in early 2018.
The Brook Waimarama Sanctuary is now focusing to re-create a historic piece of New Zealand which today is only found on a few offshore islands. Resident birds, reptiles and invertebrates are flourishing already and species previously lost from the area - such as kiwi and tīeke - will be reintroduced in the near future. The ultimate vision is a place where the whole community can play a practical role in safeguarding our natural heritage as well as being a major tourism destination for visitors to New Zealand.

A great place to visit. A very kind and informative volunteer met us and shared good insight as to the park and the different trails, he even lent us an umbrella as it was raining when we arrived. We had a fabulous time exploring and spent 4 hours here as we walked up to the end of the park. The sounds of birdsong and trickling water are very peaceful. Lots of cool river crossings to hop over and educational pieces to read along the Valley trail. Highly recommend :
This is a magical place - the staff are so friendly and helpful and everything is so well organised. Sign posts get you where you want to go and the map they give you as you come in makes it really easy to navigate. We had a fantail come right up to us and follow us for about 1.5kms. There are some amazing places to stop along the way with crystal clear streams and amazing little waterfalls. This would be a great place to take kids and teach them about native birds and trees.
It was beautiful. A very easy track which is wheelchair accessible. Teeth waterfalls and creeks were spectacular after the recent rain. It was a chilly day in August when we went and a bit late in the afternoon so I wasn't very successful photographing birds although we heard many.Visited onWeekend
Fantastic walks, a good paved one for wheelchairs and prams, and then some tougher ones - don't recommend in flip flops Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot sure
What a special place this sanctuary is! Thanks to all the staff and volunteers who have reestablished native plants and birds in this area. It was a real treat to experience nature this close to the city with lush bush, some magnificent trees and plenty of birdlife. The paths are well marked and well maintained, and include options for either easy or more challenging treks. A fab way to have a short break from city life and devices!
Amazing wildlife sanctuary with great tramping trails. There are a lot of trail options, from easy accessible short loops to more adventurous trails through old growth native bush, and if you keep an eye out there are some beautiful swimming holes in the rocky streams for a cold dip after a few hours tramping too. The volunteers at the visitor center are really friendly and passionate about the work being done at the sanctuary and are happy to recommend which walks are suitable for your timeframe and level of fitness. The price of admission might seem a little high but it's an amazing unique spot and a project well worth supporting!
Highly recommend. The trails are very well kept and the reserve is beautiful.Visited onPublic holidayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Had a lovely walk around the Brook Sanctuary today. Was greeted by very friendly staff Katie and a volunteer Sally who gave a great introduction on how the sanctuary is run. We did a small, 1 hour walk around a well sign posted route. You need to wear trainers for some of the routes and the longer ones would be best with hiking boots. There is a wheel chair./ stroller friendly route as well. We paid $40 for a family ticket which was exceptionally good value. We would definately recommend it to everyone and will visit again in the future.
Beautiful place and great help from local volunteers. The wall around the sanctuary is to protect birds inside from predators. The first loop is landscaped so it is easy access to families and wheelchairs. Well worth the small fee, families or year long passes, which helps to maintain the facilities
Brook Waimaram is a fantastic project and deserves support. The walks up and down the valley are fun and not too strenuous.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
