The Brook Sanctuary

About

A community based initiative working to restore a pest free wildlife sanctuary close to Nelson, New Zealand.

Story

Imagine a place... where native plants and animals thrive, without threat from introduced pests. ... alive with birdsong, where rare species such as kiwi, tuatara and kakapo roam freely. ... where you can get involved and make a difference. ... where visitors can see native flora and fauna close to home.

Mission

The Brook Waimarama Sanctuary is a registered charitable trust and a community-based initiative working to create a pest-free wildlife sanctuary close to the Nelson city centre. Integral to creating the Brook Waimarama Sanctuary is a pest-proof fence over 14km long that encloses the area. The last pest mammals were removed in early 2018.
The Brook Waimarama Sanctuary is now focusing to re-create a historic piece of New Zealand which today is only found on a few offshore islands. Resident birds, reptiles and invertebrates are flourishing already and species previously lost from the area - such as kiwi and tīeke - will be reintroduced in the near future. The ultimate vision is a place where the whole community can play a practical role in safeguarding our natural heritage as well as being a major tourism destination for visitors to New Zealand.

It's one of the finest predator free areas in New Zealand. Building the fence must have been extremely challenging. Inside is a forest that is not being degraded by goats, stoats and rats. That alone makes it worth a visit. Of course there is more. The Orange-fronted Parakeet it has many names was re-introduced . The population here is the largest anywhere I'm pretty sure. Great staff. Great Birding, really great Birding.
Amazing little hidden bush walking tracks in Nelson city! Right on the edge of the city you can find lush NZ bush, birds, history and fun. I went by myself and enjoyed nearly 4hours inside the sanctuary Thank you to all supporting the cause Staff were so friendly Safe exploring here
The best place to hike, forage, bird-watch, and feel what nature should be without human-intervention and introduced pests! Friendly staff and very peaceful.
We love spending time at the Sanctuary, be it for the day or just an hour or so. Public transport the new electric bus to the door if you prefer, and welcoming volunteer staff who are very helpful. My initial thoughts on paying an admission fee was could the charge be justified. Now after visiting almost 30 times we bought a yearly family ticket, very reasonable i am more and more convinced that it is money well spent. With each visit i have become further enchanted by this beautiful old growth bush walk on the edge of Nelson city and highly recommend it to all.
A fantastic hill walk in the bush other day. Lots of bird chatter to accompany you on the walk with a fair few sightings as well. Some areas are real thick bush with steep winding narrow pathways so be sure to go prepared with good walking/hiking shoes and water. A really good wildlife project right next to Nelson and highly recommend if you’re in the area.
This sanctuary sets the standard for preserving native landscape and all life within. Incredible work by volunteers through the years. The tracks are well marked and maintained. HIGHLY recommend a visit!Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot sure
We came here on their open day so it was interesting to see the sanctuary with lots of people and events happening on some parts of the trails. Lovely views and therapeutic sounds of the birds in the sanctuary. Definitely coming back here.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot sure
We were blown away by the Glowworm tour we went on last night. It started with a delicious hot Kawakawa beverage while our tour guide welcomed us to the Sanctuary. Our guide, Eve kept us informed and entertained throughout this stand out nocturnal adventure. Thank you Waimarama Sanctuary for providing this experience. Highly recommend
This is a magical place - the staff are so friendly and helpful and everything is so well organised. Sign posts get you where you want to go and the map they give you as you come in makes it really easy to navigate. We had a fantail come right up to us and follow us for about 1.5kms. There are some amazing places to stop along the way with crystal clear streams and amazing little waterfalls. This would be a great place to take kids and teach them about native birds and trees.
A great place to visit. A very kind and informative volunteer met us and shared good insight as to the park and the different trails, he even lent us an umbrella as it was raining when we arrived. We had a fabulous time exploring and spent 4 hours here as we walked up to the end of the park. The sounds of birdsong and trickling water are very peaceful. Lots of cool river crossings to hop over and educational pieces to read along the Valley trail. Highly recommend :
