Te Tiriti o Waitangi Marae

About

Located in the beautiful Bay of Islands. On the shore of Te Tii Bay Waitangi. Waitangi is known throughout Aotearoa New Zealand as “The Birthplace of the Nation."

Story

He mea hanga toku whare, ko Papatuanuku te paparahi.

Within my house, Papatuanuku is the footstool beneath, the mountains are the supportive posts and we see Ranginui, the ceiling above us. Puhangatohora looks across to Te Ramaroa, Te Ramaroa looks to Whiria, the sacred mountain of Rahiri, his seat of war, Whiria looks toward Panguru, to Papata to the trees swaying in the westerly wind; From Panguru, Papata to Maungataniwha, Maungataniwha towards Tokerau, Tokerau to Rakaumangamanga, Rakaumangamanga to Manaia, which stands near the rocky coast, from Manaia to Tutamoe, Tutamoe to Maunganui, and Maunganui to Puhangatohora. My mountains will always stand firm, through daylight and darkness, because this is the sacred house of Ngapuhi, giving me life!

Mission

Our primary hapu [sub-tribe] is Ngati Rahiri named in 1604 by Te Ra, the son of our puhi tupuna whaea Maikuku, grand-daughter of the eponymous rangatira [chief] of NgaPuhi, whose name was Rahiri. Our people have geneaology to many tribes and sub-tribes in Aotearoa New Zealand, making Te Ti Waitangi a very significant place not only for ourselves and our main tribe NgaPuhi, but for the whole of the country Maori and pakeha alike because it was here that the colonials settled and married our Maori ancestors.

Products

The wairua [spirit] of Te Tiriti O Waitangi has touched the hearts of many many people. The sadness, the anger, the injustices, the frustrations and far-between joys of generations of indigenous peoples have embraced our marae with an impenetrable cloak of rangatiratanga [independence] that many come to experience and as result Te Tiriti O Waitangi marae is booked continuously throughout each year. Groups large and small, young and old, Maori and tauiwi [other nationalities], creeds and religions, come to learn about the history and the experiences of how this nation began.

There is much to see and do. Not every group can afford the five-star hotels in the Bay of Islands and what we offer is simple, clean, friendly and cost effective in one of the most beautiful spots in Aotearoa New Zealand :

Traditional powhiri – karanga, mihi mihi, whakatau

Maori kai or pakeha food at competitive prices

Sleep-overs [on the floor]

Wananga or conference facilities

Arranged coach tours, waka [canoe] trips and coastal walks

Haka, waiata, korero, poi

or you can simply do you own thing, cook and clean for yourselves for an unlimited period of time provided there is no existing booking. The only times we are not open for bookings are the 3rd to the 8th February and the 27th to the 29th October each year.
