Story

Te Matua Ngahere is a giant kauri (Agathis australis) coniferous tree in the Waipoua Forest of Northland Region, New Zealand. The tree's Maori name means "Father of the Forest". Although not as massive or tall as its neighbour Tāne Mahuta, Te Matua Ngahere is stouter, with a girth just over 16m. It is believed to be the second largest living kauri tree, and to have the biggest girth of any kauri in the country. According to The New Zealand Herald, it has the biggest girth of any tree in New Zealand. As there is no means of measuring the tree’s age, it is variously estimated to be between 1200 and 2000 years old; or between 2000 and 3000 years old; or even 4000 years old. One resource, published by National Geographic Books, claims that Te Matua Ngahere may be the oldest tree in New Zealand, while another suggests that it's the oldest rainforest tree on earth.Greatly revered by the Māori, Te Matua Ngahere is watched over by many local Maori Guardians. The tree, a remnant of the ancient rain forest that once grew on the North Auckland Peninsula, has a relationship with other flora, such as orchids, clubmoss, and a rata tree that grew on it. Unfortunately, the Te Matua Ngahere suffered severe damage in July 2007, due to extreme winter storms in Northland when the rata which was growing on top of Te Matua Ngahere, was felled by strong storm winds, and took with it the central leader of Te Matua Ngahere plus several of its branches, thus shortening its life by hundreds of years.

This huge tree stood here well before our society as we know it was made. I like the fact that it is a bit hidden in the forest and you can't immediately see it from the road. Walking towards it is already magical since you just see little bits of it until the very end. Make sure to not skip it!Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
Take the time to stop on the road while you are driving through New Zealand to see the second largest living Kauri tree. It’s about a 15 minute walk along easy and well developed trails and raised wooden walkways to reach this amazing natural wonder. Put it in your “must see” list, and enjoy a short relaxing hike, too. There is plenty of parking along the road. Be sure to clean your shoes on entering the area to protect the trees!
Just before the Tane Mahuta stop, take the time to walk the Kauri Forest walk and see Te Matua Ngahere, the 2nd largest Kauri tree, and wider than Tane at 16 metres. Great walk to see various enormous century-old Kauri trees together.
The father of the forest. Found it even more impressive than Tane Mahuta. Beautiful 25 minute walk through the Kauti forest to reach this massive beast. Simply amazing. The path can be done with a pram/buggy
Second biggest Kauai. Well worth the walk. Enjoy the journey and the destination. The die-back in some of the trees along the way means you won't be seeing Kauai for much longer.
By far the better stop to view the large Kauri. Magnificent walk to the trees. This is a must see!!
the kauri trees are breathtaking
Far more impressive than Tane mahuta, absolutely worth the short walk to get there
Amazing walk and track beautiful views of many Kauri trees
This was a great walk for the kids, about an hour return. We have two 5 year olds and one 7 year old and they moved it. I brought a couple snacks to enjoy when we got to Te Matua Ngahere and everyone was happy! It's the perfect pair to seeing Tane Mahuta, just 2 minutes up the road.
