Ko matou he whatu raranga kakahu Huruhuru.
We are weavers of Kakahu; Kahu Huruhuru (Maori Feather Cloaks), Korowai (tasseled cloaks), Rapaki, Hieke (rain capes) and other crafts; using traditional techniques with both traditional and contemporary materials.
Using carpet wool, mop, jute or muka(flax) as whenu (foundation) and cotton thread, jute or muka for the aho (rows), taniko thread/cottons to taniko. We use all types of feathers, donations welcome for our mahi ataahua (beautiful work).
Our group was founded by the late Whaea Yvonne Marshall & Whaea Grace, whose mana left very strong values for us to follow.
2013 - five kahu huruhuru were completed.
We are a group who meet every Friday morning and/or Tuesday evenings to learn and share the art of weaving. We are now also incorporating harakeke (flax) work.
We pay a yearly fee to help with materials and cover other costs as best we can.
We embrace our monthly participation @ Te Manawa Museum Palmerston North, and also School visits. We hope you enjoy our page. :)
