Very well presented, easy to view, lots of good information. The displays have been well thought out and are in keeping with the purpose of the information they relate to.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNot sure
Definitely worth the time and the modest entrance fee $9 to learn about the area. I especially enjoyed the informative 16 minute video played in the theatre at the startVisited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
A delightful, informative and encompassing experience. A glimpse into the past, sharing how this particular area was peopled, farmed, dug up, tamed and explored was a brilliant education. Films, photographs, displays and items that came from those periods all added to the experience. Great staff, friendly and accommodating, great price for admission, would recommend to locals and visitors alike.
We were prompted to visit this Museum and Visitor Information Centre by a review which raved about their 15 minute film. We enjoyed it, but not at an 8.6 on IMDb level*! However Oscar-winning isn’t this short movie’s objective. Rather it’s to provide a succinct and easy to absorb overview of the early local history. Then when you view the many individual exhibits they’re that much more meaningful. The welcome we received from Brent and the information he provided were excellent - ask him for anecdotes about Hillary if he’s there when you are! So it’s well worth the modest ticket price of NZ$9 per adult. This includes entry and introduction movie. $5 for introduction movie only. Kids 14 and under go free. *Note: IMDb is a film review and ratings service and nothing to do with sound volume! A film which gets 8.6 on IMDb is truly outstanding.
This is the 2nd oldest town in NZ Steeped in fabulous history. Beautiful scenery, beaches picnic areas, cafes, art work everywhere. Loved visiting here and will plan another trip where by I stay a while.Visited onWeekendWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo

Te Hikoi is a fantastic museum. The visit starts with a film, continues with stories of settlers, resources, and rocks. The Māori tool making process was fascinating and seeing how the local hāpu took advantage of the varied geology to craft exceptional items was fascinating! The discovery section that has more rocks of the region is also well worth exploring for adults and children alike! Well worth the very reasonable entry fee!
Great little museum tucked away in Riverton. Lots of old photos and stories of locals who were involved with whaling, sealing, timber industry and farming both Maori and pakeha. Small life like scenes brought it to life. Would revisit it to see the 15 minute video as we couldn't do that this time.
Really great experience to visit this little Southland museum. Interesting stories about history of the region, nice welcome movie, friendly staff. Entrance fee $9 per Adult is ok, worth to spend there around 2 hours to read thru all the information panels or enjoy the place. Be aware of motion detector for lights/power so if you got stuck with one exhibition, you'll need to make some move to start power again :
Such a well set up and presented museum. Our friendly guide explained everything and assisted us through the museum. Such a fascinating history through the Maori culture to the various exploitative endeavours of the European Settlers. Well worth a visit if you're in Riverton or nearby.Visited onWeekdayWait timeNo waitReservation recommendedNo
