I'm not too sure how to rate this: an older motel that is clean & tidy, there are signs of wear etc but overall for the price it's really good. It's on a main road, there is a Woolworth just across road and a Speights ale house just down the road, so food option are close by, other thing is it's under the fligth path for the airport but there isn't that meany fligths as its a smaller regional airport.
We were a very late check-in having left the Kaiteriteri campground with the prospect of heavy rain coming. The new owners allowed our late arrival by leaving the unit door open. The room was very spacious and the bedroom at the back was very good. Our children appreciated the fresh beds. The rooms had new carpets and you could smell fresh paint. Overall the Sundowner Motel was a great find.
Stayed three nights. Booking was straightforward. Rooms could do with a proper cleanup. Tea & toilet supplies were not replenished. Pool area not cleaned. Cooking space has no hood/vent so if you cook the whole room will smell. Noisy fan no air-conditioning. This motel is ok for brief stays. Greatest plus is the supermarket directly across the road.
Carpet, bed, and wash rooms are nice and okay to manage. The person in the reception is nice. But other things are hard to use. When we walked into the reception, there was lots of smoke smell and stared the bad vibes from there. When we ask about pool they mentioned can use it but water may cold. We walked there and it's really dirty you don't think to step in. They should have simply mentioned it is not clean and need some work to do. Utensils and cupboards are really bad and very old. This is the first motel stay in NZ I didn't feel comfortable. No wonder if people give fewer stars. If you have no option to find and just need to sleep and go, this motel is okay. They have a fan in the corner sitting with lots of dust. If people think to start it, that will give lots of dust around the room. I saw an ant spray in the room, but no ants around. I saw like other people mentioned. May they took care of that. I suggest buying a bottle of water as they don't taste like other cities. I don't think it has anything to do with motel, though.
The room was nice and well appointed but dated. One of the lower cupboard doors fell off one of the hinges when first opened. The spa tub was nice but the hot water supply was limited as it drew from a tank as opposed to being an on demand system. The room was clean and was also cleaned and prepped each day which was nice. There is also no A/C and the afternoon sun hits the windows and heats up the rooms quite a bit. When we left for the day the staff left the blinds open when they cleaned the room so it was warm upon our return. Some initial issues getting a WiFi connection but the issue was resolved with the help of the front desk staff.
