The food has improved slightly since the change of ownership recently. The pineapple fritters are AMAZING and the fish is always a good size. They always chuck in a couple of extra potato fritters too. Feel bad that these guys have had a bad wrap for their pricing recently, I think it is on par with any other fish and chip shop in the country. There's definitely room for improvement, especially with how the shop is presented, but it's always a decent feed!
Got a phone order, $45 later n2 kids 5 &10 and mumnWe are big seafood eaters & often get fish& chips after surfing at least once a month, so normally very hungry by the time we come in ,nUnfortunately not even hunger could do the trick - no one wants to eat this, having to cook real food at 7:30 nPrice is not a problem if I'm eating what it's worth- definitely not up to pa, we won't be back.
Over the many years I have visited this shop it has never let me down with my average order of some chips or ice cream, so I can't say much on the menu as a whole, but from the food I have had, it has always been of a high quality.nThe staff have always been great. They are always so patient and kind when I order, which is a big thing for me because I often take a while to actually order.nnSo, to sum it up, Stingray Matt's has great chips, ice cream, and people.
Was disappointed. Mary and her crew was not there. Did she sell? This was Monday Labour Day ‘24. Chips tasted like it was cooked twice. The hoki fish wasn’t fresh and was just OK. One thing that was a thumbs up was that it wasn’t oily. The hamburger was OK. My fish burger wasn’t good. The good is that it had tomato, lettuce, sauce. I did ask for extra egg, but wasn’t added but was charged for it. I did call them about this. The fish was crumbed but slightly over cooked so the crumbs were too crunchy. I did not finish eating the fishburger. The donut was good. The pineapple fritter was good. The banana fritter was a disappointment. The batter was good with the sugar but the actual banana wasn’t. I think it was pre-frozen because when I bit into it a lot of liquid came squirting out. I tipped it up-side-down and a whole lot of liquid came out. It put me off so I didn’t finish eating 3/4 of it. Overall very disappointed. Was not up to Mary’s standards. I “may” try them one more time, but they definitely need to up their game.
I no longer live in New Zealand but come to Mangawhai to visit my parents. I always make sure to get Stingray Matt’s when I do visit because no one does fish and chips like NZ. Unfortunately this time I was disappointed - didn’t recognise anyone behind the counter, has the business changed hands? The quality of food has certainly changed since my last visit I got mussels and a crab stick and the batter was old and crusty, as if it had been pre cooked and dunked in the fryer again. It was barely edible. The snapper was good and the chips were okay not enough salt and a bit underdone but the crab stick and mussels were truly abysmal. Please call the old owners and get some tips.
