The best and cheapest way to enjoy Stewart Island as a solo traveler!! With warm and very comfortable rooms, Stewart Island Backpackers provides cheap and quality accommodation in the heart of Oban. It's great location right on the bay, provides very easy access to local walks, shops and the ferry terminal. Would highly recommend to anyone looking for a easy and cheap stay in this beautiful place!!
One of the very best backpackers I have stayed at in all of my travels. The people who run it are lovely and very accommodating. The location is bang in the middle of Oban. All of the facilities are very well kept and clean and there is all the comforts of home both in the kitchen and lounge. They even have lots of condiments to make your food on the go just that much better. Would whole heartedly recommend this place.
I spent 4 nights at the Stewart Island Backpackers and I had a great time there! The rooms are cozy and small, which means you're only sharing with 1-3 people. It was a very social place where I got to meet and chat with tons of interesting travelers! One of my highlights from Stewart Island! Oh and I was able to see a kiwi bird just about 20 meters in front of it!!
Rooms were quite small but clean, kitchen/ lounge had everything you needed including pots, cutlery, glasses, mugs etc. Service was excellent. Would come again and recommend. Walking distance to main happenings in ObanRooms: 4/5
I recently stayed in a shared dorm at Stewart Island Backpackers. The staff are great, the location is super convenient, and the atmosphere in the lounge and kitchen area is relaxing. The rooms are simple, and the beds are comfortable. There's not much space for your belongings though! For the first night, before the Rakiura Track I was in a 3 bed dorm all the guests checked in that day too, but our room didn't smell great strong body odor and there aren't any fly nets for the windows, so it was difficult to air the room out. For my second stay after the Rakiura Track, I ended up in a 4 bed dorm and this room smelt clean and fresh upon arrival. Overall, I'd recommend this accommodation. A suggestion for improvement would be a small shelf near each bed &/or a side table to help with storing personal items. Walkability: Easy access to the ferry and anything in Oban.
We love this amazing backpackers, the owners & staff are most friendly lovely helpful, always have a smile. Great campingsite, amazing rooms with such comfy beds. They know about the tracks and hikes &will advice / tell you do or don't. Bathrooms toilet kitchen lounch are clean & perfect. Rooms: Cosy, warm, clean, comfy beds. Nearby activities: All is walkable or else cabs ate available. Walkability: The backpackers is central from everything, supermarket, coffee places, fish&chips, pub, ferry, doc, flights, walks
Great location and price. Plenty of equipment to use in the large kitchen lounge area. Boardwalks do generate a bit of noise but you get used to it. Staff super helpful. Nice hot showers. Only issue is there appears to be mold on the ceiling above door. Walls are very thin between rooms and bathrooms could do with a update. Suited for a short stay. Walkability: Quick easy walk from the ferry
Friendly staff, clean sheets, comfy beds, okay Wi-Fi. The communal area had dog-eared cards and board games, and anyone seated near the pool table risked getting a pool cue in the head. The kitchen area could have had better labelling on the scrap and recycling bins. But all told, pretty decent as backpackers go. Rooms: Communal bathroom and kitchen as expected, but the beds were surprisingly clean and comfortable.
The best camping in NZ and I believe the rooms are worth it, too!. Lovely staff, nothing is a problem, amazing kitchen, huge common area, luggage storage for an unlimited number of days, loads of local info, basic items sold at reception. You can also get free gas cartridges that people leave behind. Best part: we've seen a kiwi right by our tents, and our neighbours have seen a kaka, also right at the campsite! What more to wish for.
1st time here and a great experience, nice tidy comfy rooms, huge big lounge to sit and chill so so good thank you Rooms: So tidy , warm and comfy. Safety: Felt safe , family felt safe , rooms were secure so top effort Walkability: Easy walk to the restaurant for a good night and come back to piece and quiet Noteworthy details: Big huge lounge friendly hospitality
