Started at the Visitor Center and couldn't get over the number of birds all around. They were busy chirping away while flitting around the bird house across the back tree line. Took a short hike to see the Dan River overlook, the headed over to the boat launch area to get an amazing view of the Staunton River. Checked out the really cute picnic shelters with not one but two working fireplaces. Really nice park!
What a wonderful experience!!! I can not wait to return!!! The park staff are very friendly and professional. The park itself very clean. We stayed in cabin #5 the smallest cabin, though I don’t know why they call it that. My husband and I had plenty of space and I found it quite romantic. The town’s people were also very friendly. They Walmart near by is a great place to stock up on supplies before you head to the park so you can immerse yourself in the park and relax. There are lots of trails to explore and fishing during the day. We saw they have a pool and playground area as well. it was the off season when we visited so the pool was closed two large picnic areas with a second playground area as well. But what they are best known for is being a dark park! After hours is when the magic of the park comes alive!!! I have never seen so many stars in my life! It was amazing and for me a spiritual experience. I encourage everyone to experience this or one of the other dark parks in Virginia at least once I promise you that you will not regret it.
We stayed in cabin 2. And spent three nights & 4 days there. We used Sirius the telescope but the weather wasn't on our side, so it looks like we have to come back I had a visit with Lucas, the astronomer. He was super awesome and wished I grabbed his information before leaving. The grounds were clean, and had LOTS of life! We saw many deer, and so many lightning bugs, it was a great experience. We loved the cabin, the comfort of the big deck and fire pit. There are no TV's, so make sure you check out the trails, beach front, and make sure you check out their amazing gift shop and events they host. Thank you so much for helping us enjoy Halifax county Virginia! It has a park for the kids, hopefully the pool will be open next time.
We enjoyed our weekend at the park. We stayed in cabin #7 which was perfect for two people. Unfortunately, the almost full moon made stargazing somewhat difficult, but the Dark Sky aspect of the park is outstanding. The staff was very friendly and helpful. We even saw the white doe that hangs out there, very cool! Took some good pictures also.
First off the staff at the visitor center were wonderful, genuinely friendly and tons of help. Ran the trails to get a feel and look around the place. Look forward to checking it out again after winter has past.
Gorgeous park. Will definitely be bringing the family back for some kayaking, and the cabins overlooking the river are great. Gift shop was also a step above most other parks. Had to bodily drag my wife and daughter out of there!
Very nice park. The picnic shelters are really big & have 2 fire places each which ate pretty. The trails were VERY muddy though it hasn't rained in days but, there were alot of spots over looking the river. The rangers were also super friendly & the kids scavengers hunts were cute if turned in they got a goodie bag full of prizes!
Nice park, but really needs new management! When we arrived at the gate house, the young lady working was engaged in conversation with a friend whose truck was parked in the road. They continued their conversation for approximately 5 minutes as we waited. They both looked at us several times to show their obvious displeasure about the interruption. Eventually, we were allowed to pass. We proceeded to the visitors center. We entered and noticed saw 6 staff all sitting around looking at phones. The one who assisted us was nice but really had little information or the desire to find any. We visited various areas of the park and were absolutely taken back by the poor condition of the facility and the ammont of trash. There was trash everywhere, and it has been there for a while. Why were the staff members not cleaning up trash? The restrooms in the campground were horrible, in the men's room 2 of the 4 toilets didn't work and the working 2 were dirty and in poor condition. Trash and clothes were all over the floor. We should expect better from our state parks, and management should expect better of their employees.
We had an amazing weekend camping in the bunkhouse. Easy check in as the lock keypad is part of the reservation number. Borrowed a telescope. Thrilled to see the sky full of stars around the new moon. I have not seen so many ever in my life. Bunk bed adequate for a couple of nights. Campground bathroom pretty good, though only one restroom was in service. What a great deal the bunkhouse is! The thrills of camping without the pains of setting up tents or worrying about the rain. Our morning starts with a mini hike on the Captain Staunton trail to the Staunton river outlook, smelling the flowers and sighting the river. Campground shower hot and nice. The free archery program led by a ranger Ben was the highlight on the Take Kids to parks Saturday. Both our families had great fun, kids and adults turned into kids. Ben was so friendly and glad to let us use many rounds of shooting the targets and the fox. After lunch, kid played at the river area where a bunch of folks were fishing. Pool would have been an option if it wasn't closed for the season. I simply lazed around in the breeze reading a book. Crazy flying ants in some areas. A round of disc golf at the scenic long shaded course. Course took us on an adventure across the trails, up and down into the Dan river. Got tired at the end, as it took the 8 of us an hour and a half. Great fun as it's our first time disc golfing. Visitor center loaned us the discs to play, which is neat. They loaned almost all the equipment you can think of you need a week to do them all. Probably one of the few parks that let us do it for free. Campfire time with s'mores for the sweet tooths. Dark sky event didn't happen because of the rain. Such a disappointment as it'd been the perfect finish to our trip. Must remember to plan a trip around this event or the star party, and pray to the weather gods. Sunday morning walk to the confluence of the 2 rivers in the drizzle. Spotted a few deer, a bunny, a great blue heron and a turtle on the trail. After checking out at 10am, had fun at the 0.25 mile fitness trail with a bunch of energetic kids on the many exercises in nature. Staff very pleasant and cheerily handed out free stickers to the happy kids. Junior ranger pin a pleasant surprise. Water bottle refill station just perfect for folks who don't trust the campsite spigot. All in all a fantastic park.
AMAZING! The cabins have been recently renovated and are absolutely lovely. Everything you'd need to prepare a meal is available to you in the kitchen. Full size refrigerator, stove and oven. Fireplace inside as well as a fire pit and grill outdoors. Picnic table near the fire pot/grill area as well as an outdoor dining set on the patio. Bed was comfortable byo linens. Trails were well marked and offered fantastic views. Stargazing is an absolute delight. Staff at the visitors center were friendly and helpful. Would definitely visit again.
