Story

St Joseph's Māori Girls' College or Hato Hōhepa is a Catholic, integrated, boarding and day college in Taradale, New Zealand for girls in Year 7 to Year 13. It is the largest Māori Girls' Boarding Secondary School in New Zealand.HistorySt Joseph's Māori Girls' College was founded in 1867 by the Sisters of Our Lady of the Missions. The college commenced on the property which is now Sacred Heart College, Napier when the Sisters and the Māori Missioner, Fr Reigner SM started a little boarding school for Māori girls at first called St Joseph's Providence, which was opened on 10 October with twenty pupils. The first principal was Sister Mary St John. The college usually had an enrollment of up to 60 pupils each year into the twentieth century. After the Napier earthquake of 1931 St Joseph's was rebuilt on its present site at Greenmeadows and reopened in 1935. The Sisters remained the school's proprietors. In 1982 the proprietors signed an integration Agreement with the Minister of Education and the college entered the State education system.Compilations He Koha Waiata - A Gift Of Song (South Pacific Recordings) (1996)Notable alumni Whina Cooper ONZ DBE Moana Maniapoto: New Zealand Singer, songwriter and documentarymaker. My daughter used to attend this school in her day. Now her eldest daughter has just started here the beginning of school this year. Had our baby sister attend as well. Also 2 aunties,& our mum
I flew down from Auckland to Napier 2 days ago with OT and my daughters hoping to place my 12yr old at the school just to give her stability until OT return my daughter back to me. My daughter has been through hell regarding the children’s authorities here in NZ and Oz. The principal of the school claims she has not got the resources to help my child have a stable environment. The principal was rude, obnoxious and abrupt in her mannerisms towards me, my daughter and the OT staff member. Apparently the principal demands respect and co-operation from a torn child that has no self identity. I am glad the principal denied my child to attend her jail of a complex because OT will have no choice but to return my baby back to me sooner than later. My advise to parents of Maori daughters seeking boarding school there for their girls in Napier take a real hard look at the principal, she has serious issues and a nerve to insult your in front of you. If I can give zero stars I would so zero zero zero rrating from me. From a loving mother of 4 daughter and one son
I went to this college for 3 years and was very homesick the whole time. But while i was there the nuns looked after us like we were their children. I am very proud to have attended this college.
I o mahi katoa mahia - priviledged to have worn this logo on the school monogram when I was at Hato Hohepa. School reunion in 2017 was the Best, humble beginnings, trip down memory lane, over 1000 old girls returned to be part of the experience. Catering was outstanding, the best I have ever seen, exquisite selection of foods. The SJC sisterhood lives on in all of us, happy to be part of history.
I'm very impressed eith the culture shows and this college has a lot of interesting activities. Keep it up girls. Good video clips in you tube. Must be interesting annual dinner...still the best to this college.
