Story

The Southland Astronomical Society is the southern most astronomy society in the world.
It is based in Invercargill, New Zealand's southernmost city.

We welcome any enquiries about membership to the society. As a member you are welcome to attend our monthly meetings held at 7:30pm on the first Thursday of every month except for January.
Meetings are held at the Hearing Association rooms, 126 Leet St, Invercargill.
We discuss the 'goings on' in our night sky, local and worldwide. We often have slideshows and presentations about a very wide range of astronomy topics.
Our members are very friendly and you will always recieve a warm welcome.

We are incorporating the observatory (Located at the Southland Museum & Art Gallery) into the page also so we can give you any new details, updates and share photos, information etc.
While the observatory is closed during daylight savings period we are updating information within the observatory. We strive to cater for everyone from small chiildren to adults.
We will share changes made in the observatory as we complete them and advise of when it will be re-opening and times etc
The purpose of this page is for us to update you about sky events and be able to interact with all of you keen sky observors more often and efficently.
Please don't hesitate to contact us via our message system or email for membership enquiries or any other questions you might have. We look forward to bringing you information and having lively discussions.

I have been studying astronomy ever since Yuri Gagarun walked in space, so volunteered some of my time on a Saturday night when the clubrooms and observatory weather pending are open. There are a number of members present, usually the same ones, ready to show weather permitting the public the latest in alien culture, and maybe getting people a bit closer to creation. If the weather is not so amiable, members have a display on inside the clubrooms of different aspects of astronomy. Astronomy is not just looking at stars, there is a lot of science and technology behind it, and the Southland Astronomical Society would undoubtedly encourage any person who is interested. The society even owns a Meteorite, which for it's smallish size is eerily heavy.
Great place for all the family even if its just to see our Moon
Southland Astronomical Society Observatory in Invercargill is New Zealand's southernmost observatory. Operated by Southland Astronomical Society but owned by the Southland Museum and Art Gallery, it is situated on the western side of the museum building. As it is located in the central city it is not ideal for viewing due to light pollution from the city. The location does make it easily accessible and means some people who may not ever get to see through a telescope can easily get the opportunity. The telescope, although old is still quite capable. Members of the society are enthusiastic and love to show its capabilities on the open nights. Normally during winter due to early darkness.
