Story

Sancta Maria College is a co-ed Catholic School in Auckland, New Zealand. It is named after the schooner on which Bishop Pompallier travelled around New Zealand. The nameThe College is named after the mission schooner Sancta Maria on which Bishop Jean Baptist Pompallier sailed around New Zealand. The name Sancta Maria is a Latin title for Mary, the Mother of God. It means Holy Mary.Bishop Pompallier, who is a specially honoured pioneer of the New Zealand Catholic Church, arrived in the Hokianga from France in 1838 with a group of Marist Priests and Brothers. With this group, he sailed around New Zealand converting settlers to Catholicism in the early 1840s.Fathers Garin and Viard who accompanied Bishop Pompallier established churches in Howick and Panmure. Bishop Pompallier devised his own flag for the vessel - a bunting version of the Miraculous Medal, It consisted of a blue cross surmounting a large M and surrounded by twelve stars. The background was white. These twelve stars have been incorporated into the school logo along with the Sancta Maria and the school's motto 'FAITH IS OUR COMPASS'.The College’s name commemorates the historic arrival and work of Bishop Pompallier. There is a comparison between the vessel Sancta Maria being used to spread the Word and our College being a vessel for furthering the Religious Education of young people in the area.HistorySancta Maria College was built in 2004 and was used as a 'transfer' school from St Mark's and Star of the Sea Primary schools in Howick and Pakuranga, New Zealand. There has been a notable increase in the population of students and the school has also been expanded to include 5 classroom 'blocks'. When Sancta Maria Catholic Primary School came in the year of 2010 they shared the same auditorium for assemblies and masses and so the college built a new gym for P.E.

i attended this school a year ago and i must say this is an absolute horrible school. some teachers are alright but most teachers are overly strict, some aren't even "strict" but just very rude and mean towards some students especially some of the deans. one of the intermediate deans wont be specific about which dean seemed a bit sexist. she was very rude, disrespectful and mean. I was in her homeroom, every time i entered her class or when she yelled at someone i always got extremely anxious and scared. children should come to school for education and happiness not to be covered with fear. it's not just the deans the counseling is horrible they literally made me wanna "unalive" myself more when i was already on the verge of doing it. they literally force you do speak no matter what they do. Teachers don't care about a students mental health or any health in general. How can you yell at someone for being depressed. They always had a whole assembly about uniform like once a month, we get the message. their so strict about uniform you can literally receive an after school detention for having your socks pulled down. overall, horrible school please don't make your kids attend this school.
I would not recommend Sancta Maria College to any child as it can make them feel insufferable, miserable and bored with their entire high school life because of the teachers and the rules they made. Most teachers are biased, hypocritical, one-sided, cold-hearted, uncaring, lack empathy, irritable and overall bad at teaching. They tend to get easily pissed when you don't comply with their rules such as no phones in class, wearing the right uniform, appearance-wise earrings, hairstyle as you can get detention or suspended. They do not give you respect or free will and this rather makes this 'school' a state prison for children. I have a feeling they suck each other off just to purposely make your school life feel trash and they only care about their pay. Overall, do not enroll your child into this school, go to Ormiston or just leave NZ in general. L teaching, L environment, L empathy, L rules, L uniform, L staff, L everything.
I went here it's a really good school.
All my kids went to this school. Great school. One of the best school in Auckland. Its one of school with high NCEA passer.
Good education environment overall, however, some teachers make it unbearable. The uniform rules alone deserve a whole ted-talk for how absurdly strict they are. Girls specifically get told off for the smallest things; diamonds in your ear? take them out right now. Nose hoop under your mask? Take it out. Your necklace is showing underneath your shirt? take it off. Your hair is slightly tinged an unnatural colour? re-dye it right now. Its insane how these grown adults think that these simple altercations to my appearance will affect my learning. SO MUCH for a school about creativity and faith, how am I, a growing teenager, supposed to express myself if there are restrictions preventing me from doing just that? How am I, a literal child, supposed to find what I want to be and who I am, if I cannot express myself through my appearance? How else should I do that?? Not to name names, but some teachers truly do not deserve to be getting paid the same amount as some of their counterparts. Tell me how a grown 50 year old woman, throwing a tantrum like a child, yelling at her students and telling us she doesn't like us, deserves to get paid the same amount as her nicer, more matured and understanding co-workers? Enlighten me, how does a grown woman who tells her students to not give her attitude, or be a "smarty pants" for simply trying to correct her or prove something she said was wrong, deserves to get paid the same amount? Tell me, how having a conversation with this SAME GROWN WOMAN is the equivalent to talking back? It's insane how students a fraction of these teachers' ages have more dignity and maturity than them. This same grown woman, refuses to let her male students go to the bathroom less than 5 seconds after letting her female students go. This grown woman, gets off consequence free even after having multiple complaints about her thrown towards deans, school-counsellors, higher powers, etc.
overall it is a great school. there are lots of people and it is easy to make friends. Although some of the teachers are very old fashioned and have not changed they way of teaching. Some of the teachers don't even teach you they just give you the work and make you do it. You can't judge a school form just some of the teachers. Most of the teachers there are wonderfull and really want you to learn. The grounds are beautiful and inviting. Its is a great environment to learn and grow. I recommend this school for everyone and anyone.
Such a beautiful school! Values are well implemented, teachers are truly dedicated and determined, and there are so many opportunities available for students : As a student myself, I can safely say that the people are so nice, everyone's so friendly and teachers are always super happy to help. I particularly love the wide range of co-curricular activities - sports, music and academic are all covered. Highly recommend!
Great school with nice learning environment. Good communication from school and let us know what’s happening and how the kids are performing. Reasonable amount of homework and tests to keep studying on track.
Great and such a lovely school ..Love it when all teachers ,prefects and helpers are all out directing the traffic..This helps us parents dropping off kids to school..Thank you so much.First year for my daughter and for me to drop off and pick up my girl from school..1000% great service !!
I attended this high school four years ago. There were some absolutely fantastic teachers. But they were far far outweighed by the disgusting appalling teachers hired by the school. Several were blatantly sexist. Several expressed the fact they hated teaching and overall hated their job. Awful awful behaviour by people hired to teach myself and my peers. They would dangle things over your head such as a "letter of recommendation" as a threat against your behaviour no one in my entire life has ever asked for my high school letter of recommendation. It's extremely chidlish behaviour. Holding something over your head that means absolutely nothing, just so you won't fulfill a harmless school prank, is the behaviour of a child. If you want your kids to be patronised and disrespected, by all means send them to Sancta. If you want your children to learn actual respect, I would look elsewhere.
