Had a good time at the fishing cafe, as two girls and their first time fishing we had a traumatic but good time. I don’t think we were mentally prepared to kill what we caught which was our own fault but a nearby gardener stepped in and gave us a hand which we were very grateful for after much screaming and fuss. We went on a Tuesday and the lake and cafe weren’t busy at all and there was an abundance of fish to catch, we managed to hook one in about ten minutes which was really cool, we were prepared to wait a lot longer. Because the lake was so big it also didn’t feel too crowded, definitely felt like we had a lot of space between us and the next people fishing. When they cooked up the fish it was also delicious! I wish they offered some rice to go with the fish when you got the option of sashimi though instead of chips! I’ve included the video of us catching said fish below for your own enjoyment.
The smoked salmon was delightful, perfectly seasoned without being salty. Unfortunately, I couldn't sample the freshly caught sashimi option as I'm not a big fan of fishing.
The road up to the salmon farm is easy to drive and there is plenty of car parking. It’s a nice break for an activity and some food after going over the Takaka hill. The staff are really friendly and were willing to answer any questions and help out. Amazing that you can borrow fishing gear for free, you receive a rod, a net and a plastic container to store the salmon in with a weapon to spike through the fish to kill it. You can buy fish food to attract the fish cheaply, but we didn’t need to use this to catch our fish. Be prepared to pay for any fish that you catch, and look up different cost options for how you want the fish prepared for you, I found this easy to find and really clear on the website but there were less obvious signs with pricing at the farm and cafe. If you didn’t know ahead of time you might feel unprepared to pay so much, whereas if you check on the website or ask if there is a pricing list available you should feel prepared. We took about an hour to catch our fish without fish food, our fish was 1.75kg and we paid approx $75 for our fish and to have it smoked. We grabbed some food and drinks while we waited, but it took around 30 mins for our fish to be returned to us. I’d recommend this activity for families and couples, you don’t need much fishing experience to go, but if you’ve never used a fishing rod before you won’t be given a tutorial so it will be best to ask for help before trying.
Had and amazing time today. We caught 2 fish, 1 smoked and one sashimi. Ryan and Katie make an awesome team. Ryan is a true master with his knife and Katie was so friendly and helpful. Fun to be able to catch then eat your fish. Disappointed that we couldn't fish in the lake but had to fish from holding tanks so couldn't cast your line. Had our fish hot smoked and it was delicious

Fantastic place! Free to visit and wander around, plus free to fish for your own salmon, with all the gear provided. You then pay for what you caught and have the option of having it prepared as you wish! If, like me, you don't fish, the cafe serves a superb selection of their own catch. I had the salmon platter for one, with no extras, and was astounded how much it included! Utterly stuffed full of delicious, super-fresh salmon, served a number of ways
What an amazing place. We're complete novice fishers and we're able to catch 4 well sized salmon with a little help of some pellets. The free fishing equipment hire is brilliant and the different smoke flavours are all delicious. Really cool to see the pools as well with different aged fish.
