Story

The National Army Museum is the museum of the New Zealand Army. It was formerly known as the Queen Elizabeth II Army Memorial Museum. It is situated 94 minutes south of Taupo on State Highway One, on the southern side of the small military town of Waiouru. The 1300 square metre museum is fortress-looking in design, complete with a bridge and moat. It took the 2nd Field Squadron of the Royal New Zealand Engineers 276 days to build, and was opened in October 1978.According to the museum's literature, it functions as a memorial to those who have fallen, to those who have served and are still serving, and to the battles fought by New Zealand soldiers. It is also a research, teaching and training facility of New Zealand's military history. Associated literature reveals "the museum serves as a place of connection between visitors and the nation's military past, a place where people can engage with real life stories and experiences and discover how these conflicts have shaped the nation".The museum offers a number of facilities and experiences which include a gift shop, the Home Fires Café, the Kippenberger Research Library, and the Tears on Greenstone Memorial. On display are many and varied collections, including weapons, war memorabilia, military vehicles, exhibitions of battles, a huge medal collection exhibiting medals associated with New Zealand and its army, and lifelike displays of twelve of the biggest campaigns that New Zealand troops have been involved in. "Kidz headquarters" provides children with fun learning activities.

A great museum for all ages! There is a huge amount of things to see and you can spend hours and hours in the museum without seeing the time pass. There a lot of important and rare historical pieces and their collection is very rich. A part of the museum has been renowned not long ago which modernized the museum a lot. I highly recommend this museum if you have some time to spend in Brussels!
Huge museum, with many interesting exhibits from medals to tanks and planes. And the panoramic view from the Arcades du Cinquantenaire is amazing! We spent there the whole day, and it was not enough. It's perfect as well for kids and adults, especially if you are interested in history. Of course, it's worth visiting and I recommend it!
Very large and well organized museum. Covers military history from swords to jets but much of the focus is on WW II. If you are at all interested in military history you should plan on spending several hours here. The admission price is reasonable, the staff speaks English and was very helpful, and a surprise: the Sky Cafe was quite good and not expensive. One negative... Most of the exhibits are documented but not in English.
The park and then the museums are must-sees for everyone who comes to Brussels. I am avid for history and wars in particular, the museum covers it all, it is no surprise if you would take a full day or more to cover everything, as you go up till the roof! The arms going from simple knives to heavy artillery, aircrafts and navy models... It's literally wonderland, Alice! Splendid stuff!
Of all the military museums I have visited within the US and abroad...this one takes the cake...bar none! We definitely plan to go back as we short-changed ourselves by only planning to be there for around 90 mins...easily need 3-4 hours. I promise you and your kids we had all three of ours with us will not be bored. This was our #2 museum Natural Sciences was #1 during our 3 day weekend stay in Brussels.
Very nice museum. It has several exhibitions related to medieval military traditions, war of 18-19 centuries and WWI, WW2. Also there is a huge hall with aviation and paratroopers thematic. I was so happy to see the Mark IV tank alive!
It's a really nice museum with a lot to do - I've spent 3 hours and could've easily spent more. Nonetheless, I understand, that some sections are undergoing renovations or are old talking about the aviation in particular. But why, why wouldn't you do the new exposition the WWII also in English? Yes, there are some here and there. But mostly it's in French and NL, or it's five times smaller and near the ground... Why? And in some sections, there are English labels and then not... Why so random?
Absolutely worth a whole-day visit! So regretful that I only started touring at 1pm for the "free first Tuesday afternoon", and had to leave at 5pm without quite finishing. The museum had a wealth of artifacts spanning an interesting period of historical time, of an interesting country. Most descriptions were of course in French/Dutch some had English in a smaller font; some walls had touchscreens that held full English descriptions. The texts, like other historical museums in Brussels, had the distinct European reflectiveness compared to what I was used to in the US and China. I was surprised to find in the WWII section that the museum remembered about the invasion of China and southeastern Asian countries.
The museum is...big, and was probably a little overwhelming even for a modern history buff like me. The collection is huge, particularly for uniforms and handweapons, but can be a bit repetitive in the Napoleonic and ww1 sections. It is very nicely laid out however, and they've really taken the time to curate it and display it well. There is also a rooftop view available that offers a good view over the park, the EU buildings and towards the city centre. The building itself is very impressive.
Amazing museum, covering a wide range of historical eras. Partially renovated. Great hall dedicated to WWI. Large collection of Belgian war medals, orders and decorations. Airplanes, armoured vehicles and a collection of special forces memorabilia.
